Gamers: I\u2019ve got some very exciting news to share. I\u2019m honoured to be part of the judging panel <\/a>for this year’s Virtual Photography Awards 2025. This prestigious competition has been running for several years now, and was created by Mik Bromley, founder of TheFourthFocus<\/a> \u2013 an online resource for all things gaming and photography.<\/p>\n

There are seven categories in total to enter, including Action, Environment, People, Storytelling, Open, Lo-FI, and Collection (a cohesive image series). You can only enter one image into each category, and entries close on Dec 31st at 23:59 GMT \/ 18:59 EST\/ 15:59 PST.<\/p>\n

Not only can you show off your skills, but there are also some amazing prizes to be won, including game codes and digital keys, controllers, PlayStation<\/a> or Xbox<\/a> gift cards, a 12-month subscription to either Digital Camera World, EDGE, or ImagineFX magazines – and the overall Virtual Photographer of the Year Winner will receives a DOOM: The Dark Ages Collector\u2019s Bundle (plus more).<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re not familiar with virtual photography, it’s a highly skilled practice that essentially blurs the lines between gaming and digital art. It\u2019s sometimes referred to as in-game photography, screenshot art, or game-derived art to help people understand how these images came to be. Take a look at some of the winning shots from the 2023 Virtual Photography Awards<\/a> to get a grasp of the high standards.<\/p>\n

While virtual photography might not involve a camera in the more traditional sense, it embodies elements of photography that are required to capture a shot, such as framing, rule of thirds, composition, exposure and choosing subject matter. The best part? There\u2019s no AI involved (even some of the best camera phones <\/a>are equipped with AI tools nowadays).<\/p>\n

Gamescapes are becoming more vast every year, with side quests and entire realms to explore outside of the main story. The amount of work that goes into creating modern game worlds is not only a testament to the studios, game developers, and 3D artists who work on them, but it also opens up new avenues for virtual photographers to explore ( there has even been a virtual photography online exhibition<\/a> hosted last year).<\/p>\n
