WARNING: Includes MASSIVE SPOILERS for ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5, Part 2!<\/p>\n

There’s been plenty of theorization about the finale of Stranger Things<\/a>, examining how the group manages to defeat Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) and stop his evil plan from coming to fruition. It’s finally discovered in Season 5, Part 2, that the Upside Down is merely a bridge, a wormhole, between Hawkins and the real place<\/a> where Vecna and the Mind Flayer reside. With efforts coming together to stop Vecna from using this bridge to merge the two worlds, success means getting rid of the most terrifying, visible villain. But it also seems that Vecna isn’t the villain who poses the biggest threat, at least not to Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown).<\/p>\n

The Government and Military Are the Real Villains<\/p>\n

Kali (Linnea Berthelsen) was initially thought to be joining the show in its record-breaking season<\/a> to help Eleven and the others. It would make sense given her powers. But as Season 5, Episode 7, “The Bridge” suggests, Kali might actually be there as a wake-up call for Eleven, opening her eyes to the fact that even when Vecna is gone and life goes back to normal for everyone else in Hawkins, the situation doesn’t end for her.<\/p>\n

That’s because the real villains remain long after Vecna is killed: the military and the government. Right now, they’re being led by Dr. Kay (Linda Hamilton), who is working as the next Dr. Brenner (Matthew Modine). She used Kali to extract her blood (Henry’s blood) and inject it into pregnant women in hopes of recreating Brenner’s experiments and restarting the program.<\/p>\n

But Kali reveals that it wasn’t working and only making the women sick. Apparently, Eleven is the only one whose blood is closest to Henry’s, whose power is enough to restart the program. That’s why Dr. Kay is so obsessed with finding Eleven. And that’s why, according to Kali, she’ll never stop. Even if they eliminate Dr. Kay, there will be another one just like her, and another, and another.<\/p>\n

Kali’s reminder to Eleven that the military killed Kali’s friends before taking her twists the knife further. The only solution, according to Kali, is for her and Eleven to sacrifice themselves, not just to stop the cycle and prevent other kids from going through the same trauma they did, but also to keep her friends and family safe. As long as Eleven is around, the military and government will keep hunting her down. She’ll never be truly free, and those around her will be in danger, too.<\/p>\n

While no one wants to hear this reality, it’s sadly true. Without some way of wiping the existence of this program from the memories of any living soldier or government operative, someone will always want to keep the project going. The temptation of having an army of people like Eleven to make a powerful military is too much to pass up. They’d be more powerful in war than any gun or bomb. Save for faking her own death, there’s no other way out for Eleven.<\/p>\n

This Weakens the Story About Vecna<\/p>\n

Beyond the sad notion that Eleven may be the one to die in the series, knowing that the torment doesn’t end with Vecna dying cheapens the goal of taking him down as the climactic finale moment. Of course, he’s a massive threat to the children he has taken and his plan to create a new world in his dark image. But it seems highly likely that the group will succeed with their plan.<\/p>\n

The question has been at what cost, and with what casualties along the way. With this revelation about Dr. Kay’s experiments, Eleven and Kali may die as sisters, leaving everyone gutted that the young girl who came into their lives and changed everything is going to go out in epic fashion, allowing things to go back to normal.<\/p>\n

Will this happen? It’s now the big question on everyone’s minds about the finale, not what happens to Vecna. The focus on Vecna was more of a distraction, the real threat hiding in plain sight, the humans living in Hawkings looking to use and abuse Eleven the same way they did Henry. Maybe these two angles will converge. After all, history is repeating itself; Dr. Kay is trying to use Eleven the same way Dr. Brenner used Henry. Could all three of them \u2013 Eleven, Kali, and Henry \u2013 come together<\/a> to take down the real villain, Dr. Kay, and everyone else working with her? That\u2019s a twist we could get behind.<\/p>\n

Beneath the surface of this final season, then, we realize that this has really been about the government and military using people to achieve power and influence all along. The story is told in the prequel play Stranger Things: The First Shadow<\/a>, that the military was initially trying to devise technology to render ships invisible during battle, which is what accidentally opened the portal to the Upside Down, or rather, Dimension X.<\/p>\n

After Dr. Brenner, whose father was the sole survivor of that mission, recognized what happened to Henry, who had accidentally ended up in Destination X, his mind overtaken by the Mind Flayer, Dr. Brenner became obsessed with researching what occurred and harnessing Henry’s abilities. He used Henry’s now rare blood type to create more children like him, including Kali and Eleven. They were effectively Dr. Brenner’s vessels for a new world, just as Vecna is using the kids he is taking now as his vessels for the same.<\/p>\n

Henry’s actions as Vecna are a direct result of the way he was treated as a teen himself. He was weak; he couldn’t fend off Dr. Brenner’s manipulations. He learned how to manipulate from the best. This cycle continues with Dr. Kay, and Kali is right that even if they were to kill Dr. Kay, someone else would just step in. The idea of breeding a generation of superkids to use as soldiers is far too enticing to pass up. The humanity and morality of the situation never come into question for those greedy and power-hungry enough.<\/p>\n

Thus, the real villain all along is not Vecna, it’s not even Henry. It’s Dr. Brenner, Dr. Kay, and every military and government personnel who played a role in the project, despite knowing what was happening to these pregnant women and these innocent kids. Whether Eleven can find a way to eliminate Vecna and break this cycle without ending herself, too, remains to be seen. But in knowing the truth, it seems Eleven and Vecna are fighting back against the same thing.
