It\u2019s now under threat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>      Brisbane, Australia<br \/>\n        \u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjjnoouf00l627qh98ky3pjk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Along a nine-mile stretch of river between two waterfalls in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/world\/australia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australian <\/a>rainforest lives a tiny fish that\u2019s been there for millions of years, hiding between rocks along the riverbank by day and emerging at night to feed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi00013b6puek1psv7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This is the only place in the world you\u2019ll find the planet\u2019s sole tropical cod \u2013\u2013 a remnant of times past that is believed to have split from its closest southern relatives about 25-30 million years ago.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi00023b6pfr7rwcj7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For all that time, the tiny cod swam undetected and undescribed by modern science until 1993 when two researchers \u2013\u2013 Mark Kennard and Brad Pusey \u2013\u2013 stumbled upon the fish in the Bloomfield River, along the northern reaches of the Daintree Rainforest, which is recognized by UNESCO as the world\u2019s oldest rainforest and is brimming with rich and unique biodiversity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi00033b6p2l2u5qoi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful little fish,\u201d said Kennard, now deputy director of the Australian Rivers Institute at Griffith University, who still works with Pusey, a senior research fellow at the same university, more than 30 years on.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/sampled-bloomfield-cod.JPG\" alt=\"The Bloomfield River Cod grows no longer than 10 centimeters from snout to tail.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2056\" width=\"3088\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi00043b6pdunxbjmm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Back then, Kennard and Pusey named the fish the Bloomfield River Cod, with the scientific name Guyu wujalwujalensis, after the Aboriginal name for fish and the Wujal Wujal community, the land\u2019s traditional owners. It\u2019s also known as the tropical nightfish.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi00053b6pcspr9jl8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But this ancient species that grows to just 10 centimeters is now under threat from introduced predators and violent storms produced by man-made global warming.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi00063b6p48sdpxxk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Cyclone Jasper, one of Australia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/cyclone\/history\/jasper23.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">most destructive tropical<\/a> cyclones, tore through the cod\u2019s habitat between two waterfalls on the Bloomfield two years ago \u2013\u2013 felling trees, flooding the river and washing more introduced predators into its sanctuary.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi00073b6psdhsy7lf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This October, Kennard and Pusey returned to the river to survey the damage and count the cod in the hope of having it formally listed as endangered under Australia\u2019s biodiversity laws, which would offer it more protection.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi00083b6p6frwduf2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf we lost this, we\u2019d lose a representative of a really complex and long period of evolution,\u201d said Pusey. \u201cIt would be a tragedy\u2026 certainly a personal tragedy.\u201d\n data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Getting to the Bloomfield River takes at least four hours along an inland road from Cairns, where tourists board boats to visit the Great Barrier Reef.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi000b3b6pheqt89b7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The longer, wilder and more scenic route winds around the coast, on unsealed roads through \u201ccroc country\u201d where Australia\u2019s giant saltwater crocodiles dominate the briny waterways and smaller freshwater crocs occupy rivers and streams.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi000c3b6p6mjf0b3s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At this time of year, summer dials up the heat and humidity, steam rises from roads after sudden downpours, and the smell of sweat mixed with sunscreen and insect repellent lingers in the air.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi000d3b6pc272heys@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kennard and Pusey were on a research trip to survey Queensland\u2019s Wet Tropics when they found the fish in the 1990s.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi000e3b6puosg2oso@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            They initially had no idea what it was. But on a return trip a few years later they found enough information to confirm it was a new species.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi000f3b6p448098di@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen you find new species here, they\u2019re almost always so minor a difference, and most of the time it\u2019s not until people do the genetics, and they go, \u2018oh, that is a new species.\u2019 But this was clearly new, and it is quite exciting to find that,\u201d Pusey said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi000g3b6p49u4rt0a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The stretch of river that\u2019s home to the Bloomfield Cod is inaccessible to most visitors \u2013 but not remote enough to guarantee the cod\u2019s safety.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi000h3b6p09r2ledw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Their biggest predatory threat is the Tully Grunter, a larger native Australian fish up to 35 centimeters long, that scientists believe was introduced to the river by recreational fishers wanting a decent catch.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi000j3b6pmyyvri0v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The grunter is now competing with the Bloomfield Cod for food and potentially eating its eggs and young.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi000i3b6p9c5kwjib@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere\u2019s been an explosion in their population in the last five to 10 years, and that\u2019s why we are so concerned. They\u2019ve spread throughout most of that upper catchment area where the cod population is,\u201d said Kennard.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi000k3b6pxwv8z2f3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In parts of the river where there are no Tully Grunters, cod could be seen from the riverbank, swimming openly, seemingly without fear, he said. But in places inhabited by grunters, researchers diving with snorkels found the cod hiding behind rocks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi000m3b6pexgn4bky@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Along with the grunters, researchers have found eel-tailed catfish, native to rivers further south, and guppies that come from Central America, suggesting pets were freed and have since started breeding.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi000n3b6p3bjppjae@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But it\u2019s the impact of Cyclone Jasper they were most interested in assessing on their most recent trip.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi000o3b6pl77k1d0m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou can still see the scarring in the landscape,\u201d said Kennard. \u201cThey say it\u2019s one of the most intense weather events ever recorded in Australian history.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi000p3b6p2kfnosq3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Cyclone Jasper had weakened by the time it made landfall in December 2023, but it stalled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/cyclone\/history\/jasper23.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">over Cape York Peninsula<\/a> for several days, dumping rain on already saturated land.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi000q3b6pgzduw6j3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Around 975 mm of rain fell on some places in one day \u2013 the highest ever 24-hour total reliably measured in Australia.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi000r3b6p4v198zpy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            So much rain fell, it turned the Bloomfield River into a raging torrent.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" \u201cNormally what happens in forested rivers like this, the trees fall into the river and provide habitat for fish and other animals that live in the river,\u201d said Kennard.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi000t3b6p4glwhd3i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBut a lot of that has been stripped out and flushed downstream.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi000u3b6p8pf7zutc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Scientists feared some little fish had been flushed out, too \u2013 downstream into the path of other predatory fish, like Barramundi and Mangrove Jack, or into a salty estuary where they might not survive.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_drop-cap-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_drop-cap-elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi000x3b6pw9jrssp2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A lot has changed in the three decades since Kennard and Pusey first discovered the fish.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi000y3b6p7yxqh407@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Back then, they were a team of two in a vehicle, without even a mobile phone to communicate their whereabouts. \u201cWe\u2019re probably lucky not to get lost or die or get bogged,\u201d said Kennard.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi00103b6pc6nvm3lk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Now, drones map the stream and the vegetation from above, and environmental DNA samples indicate the presence of creatures in the water, without having to catch them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjm4fw0400003b6pj3b7zb2l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Funding from the National Environmental Science Program has broadened the team to include scientists from James Cook University and natural resource management group Terrain NRM, who know this rugged landscape better than most.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" cod.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi00133b6psj56enuq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bobby Kulka, an Eastern Kuku Yalanji Traditional Owner, said stories passed down through his ancestors didn\u2019t include mention of the mysterious fish.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi00143b6ppp6czpfb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n I\u2019ve never heard any stories about them,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi00153b6pn1rykbxs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Local Aboriginal people are being trained to help monitor the fish so that when the scientists leave, their work will help fill in the blanks about the Bloomfield Cod.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/dji-0550.JPG\" alt=\"Some parts of the Bloomfield River are inaccessible by car.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2250\" width=\"4000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi00163b6plx8l1shv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            So little is known about how the fish reproduces that no one has been able to successfully breed them in captivity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi00173b6pq644d2qi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One option to save the species may be to start a captive breeding program in case they become extinct in the wild.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi00183b6p38ky1440@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Another potential solution is to try to establish other populations in nearby catchments, where introduced species aren\u2019t a threat.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi00193b6pvwndlw5v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But finding those protected catchments could be difficult, given the dense forest that surrounds the river and the spread of invasive species.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi001a3b6pxl0w633l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Introducing populations at other sites is fraught with risk, too.  Would they upset the natural balance? Or create unintended consequences for other species that live there?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi001b3b6pet1gla1b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Clearing the river of introduced species is not an option, Kennard said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjkv8ngi001c3b6p7bsa8jac@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou could potentially remove an isolated population.
