\n\tJim Jarmusch<\/a>\u2018s \u201cFather Mother Sister Brother<\/a>,\u201d now in theaters, is made up of three very different segments, each with a notable cast discussing the nature of their family relationships. One thing they have in common is a specific color: A deep red, the color of a jammy merlot, is a throughline that appears in each character\u2019s contemporary clothing.<\/p>\n

\n\tSet in New York state, Dublin and Paris, the three segments each revolve around an adult sibling pair. While in the first two, the siblings have somewhat uncomfortable interactions with their parents, in the third Paris section, the twin brother and sister have only memories of their late parents to excavate.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe clothes worn by cast members including Adam Driver<\/a>, Cate Blanchett<\/a> and Charlotte Rampling appear to be everyday items, but costume designer Catherine George explains that all the pieces seen onscreen \u2014 even Tom Waits\u2019 very mundane hoodie \u2014 were made by iconic French fashion house Saint Laurent, a backer of the film. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe idea for the crimson theme came from Jarmusch, about whom George enigmatically says, \u201cIn the last few years,\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0been seeing colors in\u00a0a different way. Red specifically\u00a0looks different to him than it used to.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cJim called me about the movie pretty early on,\u201d George says. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHe said, \u2018We\u2019ve got this movie, it\u2019s shooting in New York, Dublin and Paris.\u2019 I\u2019m from Ireland and shooting at home was amazing, and also shooting in Paris, incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAnd then he said, \u2018Well, it\u2019s a little complicated, because YSL will be collaborating with us, but I want you to design the costumes. We\u2019ll be using some of their pieces that already fit the characters, but if they don\u2019t, then you\u2019re designing them.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cJim already had a color theme \u2014 I think it was for one character \u2014 a sort of red and pink combination, and he wanted to carry that theme through all the stories, at least the red.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0nice to start a project and already have\u00a0a sort of a\u00a0theme that\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0working within, rather than just grabbing at straws,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u00a0sort\u00a0of gave me a base to think about while I was designing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGeorge, who has worked several times with Bong Joon Ho and also has \u201cDie, My Love\u201d this year, previously collaborated with Jarmusch on \u201cThe Dead Don\u2019t Die\u201d and \u201cPaterson.\u201d Below, she breaks down how the wardrobe for each segment was created.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\"\"<\/p>\n

\t\tPart One: Father\t<\/p>\n

\n\tTom Waits is an eccentric, solitary dad who is visited in his rural New York home by his wary, traditional son (played by Adam Driver) and daughter (Mayim Bialik). Driver and Bialik\u2019s styles mirror each other; they\u2019re both in conservative blazers over crimson sweaters, while Waits sports a casual zippered hoodie.<\/p>\n

\n\tDriver\u2019s clothes were \u201cnot unlike his real clothes,\u201d says George. \u201cTom\u2019s character was a little more involved,\u201d says George, \u201cbecause he lives in a cabin and\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0portraying himself as a penniless father.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\"\"<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\tAdam Driver and Mayim Bialik\u2019s sibling pair mirror each other in conservative blazers and pullover sweaters in tones of deep red.<\/p>\n

\n\tFor Waits, they had originally though he would wear a robe or pajamas. \u201cWe initially had thought of\u00a0sort of a\u00a0dressing gown for him. But when I went to fit him,\u00a0I went to his studio in California and had the tailor from YSL with me,\u00a0and Tom tried on the dressing\u00a0gown and\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0quite feeling it,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we arrived, he was in a hoodie,\u201d she recalls.\u00a0\u201cSo\u00a0we used the pajamas that\u00a0we\u2019d\u00a0made for him, and\u00a0I said,\u00a0\u2018Let\u2019s\u00a0try your hoodie on with it.\u2019\u00a0He felt more like the character, more comfortable and natural.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOf course, even the drab hoodie got a subtle burgundy lining.<\/p>\n

\u201cEach\u00a0each\u00a0item of clothing, they would either send me images of something existing, or I would send them an image of a particular piece, and they would source the fabric. So it was a back and forth across continents,\u201d George says.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThough Waits\u2019 character acts like he\u2019s possibly broke, it turns out that might be an act \u2014 one clue is a snazzy suit he dons at the end of the segment.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhen Tom changes at the end into a suit to go out,\u00a0that was fun to make a really beautiful suit in the specific\u00a0color, and\u00a0his shoes I really loved,\u201d George says. \u201cHe wore some\u00a0creepers, like he wears in real life.\u00a0So\u00a0we had a pair made in burgundy, which were unbelievably beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\tPart Two: Mother\t<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the second segment, strait-laced Cate Blanchett and free-spirited Vicky Krieps make a once-a-year visit to their rather stiff novelist mother Charlotte Rampling in her Dublin home. The trio\u2019s distinct personalities are evident in their wardrobes.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe seem to be accidentally color-coordinated,\u201d Rampling\u2019s character says, underlining the awkwardness. \u201cHow embarrassing!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWith pink-tinted hair and a fluffy fake fur coat over a printed red sweater, Krieps\u2019 character is \u201ca bit of a party girl,\u201d George explains, though she\u2019s also putting on a show \u2014 she\u2019s possibly not the successful influencer she makes out to be.<\/p>\n

\n\tBlanchett\u2019s character is frankly uptight, which is instantly signaled by the way she wears an oxford shirt over a burgundy turtleneck. Her clothes weren\u2019t pulled from existing YSL collections, George says. \u201cWe had come up with the shirt, but then we wanted to incorporate the red, and that was, again, finding a balance. A whole red sweater would have been too much, but putting the shirt on top added to her sort of buttoned-up version of herself.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tRampling\u2019s character, meanwhile, makes the most of the couture tailoring in a burgundy coatdress that was based on a YSL jumpsuit design.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThey made beautiful pieces,\u201d George says. \u201cThe thing with working with YSL is they have access to so much incredible fabric and their production is gorgeous.\u00a0When\u00a0the pieces arrived, they were beautifully made: the shoe, the bags. Even Kate\u2019s sort of dowdy pieces\u00a0were\u00a0really beautifully made and executed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBut even YSL pieces need to be aged to make them look lived in, she says.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI find it jarring when I see something that looks\u00a0too fresh, too new, if the character is not that kind of person. You know, Tom\u2019s hoodie, his\u00a0his\u00a0sweatshirt, his pajamas \u2014 they all went\u00a0through a process of being washed and aged,\u201d says George, though she adds that Rampling\u2019s character is the type who would take very good care of her clothes.<\/p>\n

\t\tPart Three: Sister, Brother\t<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the final segment, siblings played by Indya Moore and Luka Sabbat drive through Paris to their late parents\u2019 empty apartment to talk about their family. They\u2019re as naturalistic and free-spirited as the other siblings are rigid.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThey\u2019re twins and they have some kind of psychic messaging system, and their biker jackets, even though they\u2019re two different versions, are quite similar,\u201d says George. \u201cHis is a classic sort of motorcycle jacket, and hers is more of a fashion type.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThough the color theme isn\u2019t as obvious, Indya\u2019s character does wear a red tank top, which was based on a piece George actually owned but in a Saint Laurent-designed version.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs for Sabbat\u2019s character, \u201cWe decided to keep him in a classic white T-shirt as just a sort of iconic movie character,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter working on fantastical films such as \u201cMickey 17\u201d and \u201cSnowpiercer,\u201d George says working with Saint Laurent was a welcome change of pace. \u201cIt was nice to get very specific and go back to a combination of costumes and fashion. I trained in fashion design, so it was nice to combine the two things.\u201d<\/p>\n
