The cave showed signs of heavy use by seal hunters and fishers during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/science\/archaeology\/stone-age-uk-north-sea-artefacts-b2670049.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Stone Age;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Stone Age<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/science\/archaeology\/news\/bronze-age-people-remains-farmer-b2889100.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Bronze Age,;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Bronze Age,<\/a> researchers from Stockholm University said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The island measures just 2.5sq km and there is no evidence of native land mammals. Because of this isolation, researchers believe the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/wolves\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:wolves;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">wolves<\/a> were brought in by people, most likely on ships.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/dogs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Dogs;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Dogs<\/a> first emerged from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/wolves\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:wolves;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">wolves<\/a> during the Old Stone Age, before other domesticated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/animals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:animals;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">animals<\/a>. But where and how many times domestication took place remains unclear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">One leading theory suggests that wolves gradually adapted to living near humans, while another proposes that people hand-reared wolf pups from a very early age. No dog remains dating to the earliest stages of domestication have yet been identified.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The new evidence showing wolves and humans living together on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/swedish\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Swedish;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Swedish<\/a> island points to likely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/prehistoric\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:prehistoric;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">prehistoric<\/a> domestication of wolves.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Modern domesticated dogs are theorised to be the ancestors of Grey wolves (Getty)\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/59bbbc7617e8b08b3602e05f62d130d4.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Modern domesticated dogs are theorised to be the ancestors of Grey wolves (Getty)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">DNA analysis of two bones found in the cave confirmed the animals were wolves and not dogs, with several of their features suggesting the canines had close contact with humans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">One of the wolves seems to have survived with a limb injury, which would have made hunting difficult, hinting it was cared for.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;The discovery of these wolves on a remote island is completely unexpected,&#8221;
