Paul Thomas Anderson exceeded high expectations with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/review\/2025\/09\/24\/one-battle-after-another-review-dicaprio-and-penn-face-off-in-andersons-thrilling-epic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/review\/2025\/09\/24\/one-battle-after-another-review-dicaprio-and-penn-face-off-in-andersons-thrilling-epic\/\">One Battle After Another<\/a>. Jessie Buckley confirmed her boss status in Hamnet. And so on. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But a strong case should be made for the continuing phenomenon that is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ryan-coogler\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ryan-coogler\/\">Ryan Coogler<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The amiable African-American director, now 39, has been on a roll since his Fruitvale Station, a taut social-realist piece that introduced the world to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/michael-b-jordan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/michael-b-jordan\/\">Michael B Jordan<\/a>, took the top prize at Sundance in 2013. Mainstream success came with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/creed-review-a-fresh-glint-in-the-eye-of-the-tiger-1.2496661\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/creed-review-a-fresh-glint-in-the-eye-of-the-tiger-1.2496661\">Creed<\/a>, his Rocky sequel, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/black-panther-this-film-is-revolutionary-just-not-that-good-1.3382359\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/black-panther-this-film-is-revolutionary-just-not-that-good-1.3382359\">Black Panther<\/a>, for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/review\/2025\/04\/17\/sinners-review-the-best-film-of-2025-so-far-right-down-to-the-celtic-vampires-singing-rocky-road-to-dublin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/review\/2025\/04\/17\/sinners-review-the-best-film-of-2025-so-far-right-down-to-the-celtic-vampires-singing-rocky-road-to-dublin\/\">Sinners<\/a>, Coogler\u2019s  period horror epic, still felt like something of a gamble. Yes, it has Jordan, who also headlined Creed and Black Panther, in dual roles as shifty twins. But it is not part of an established franchise. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It breaks down into an extravagant musical that offers origin stories for a clutter of black music genres. It flitted across film genres. Nobody was sure, when it opened back in April, if it could make back its considerable budget.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cEverybody had skin in the game,\u201d Coogler tells me. \u201cBut I would not have been comfortable inviting all these people to participate if I didn\u2019t see a reasonable path to success \u2013 whatever that looks like. The whole time I was aware that it wasn\u2019t guaranteed. We would need all hands on deck throughout every section of the process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sinners duly became a phenomenon. It took $367 million (\u20ac315 million) at the box office. It received ecstatic reviews. But films this bloody and extreme don\u2019t score with awards bodies. Right? It opened too early, anyway, for voters with famously short memories. Right? Think again. This month Sinners landed seven <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/2025\/12\/08\/golden-globes-2026-nominations-irish-actors-paul-mescal-and-jessie-buckley-in-line-for-picks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/2025\/12\/08\/golden-globes-2026-nominations-irish-actors-paul-mescal-and-jessie-buckley-in-line-for-picks\/\">Golden Globe nominations<\/a>, including those for best drama picture and best director. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It will surely score as well at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/oscars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/oscars\/\">Oscars<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/2025\/12\/08\/golden-globes-2026-hamnet-stars-jessie-buckley-and-paul-mescal-now-seem-certain-to-receive-oscar-nods\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Golden Globes 2026: Hamnet stars Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal now seem certain to receive Oscar nodsOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Such is the continuing buzz that, eight months after its release, Coogler and I are meeting to talk about the film and make sense of its impact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s rare for me to watch a movie after I\u2019m done with it,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m usually sick of it. This movie I haven\u2019t gotten sick of. If I had to watch it tonight I wouldn\u2019t be bummed out. That\u2019s got to count for something. Yeah, I like it quite a bit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The film follows twin brothers as, after the first World War, they return to Mississippi with plans to set up a speakeasy. On opening night the music summons up spirits who threaten the viability of the operation and the purity of the employees\u2019 souls. It touches on racism. It wonders about the origin of the blues and soul music. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The biggest surprise for viewers in Ireland was its engagement with the Irish experience. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jack-o-connell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jack-o-connell\/\">Jack O\u2019Connell<\/a> plays Remmick, an Irish vampire \u2013 part of an unholy musical combo \u2013 who offers the speakeasy staff money to gain entry. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There is maybe something here about how white musicians appropriated black music. But there is also a sense of how African-Americans and Irish immigrants faced related challenges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI started thinking about Dracula,\u201d Coogler says. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/bram-stoker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/bram-stoker\/\">Bram Stoker<\/a> is Irish. I was researching him and researching this Irish folklore character. The Abhartach? I have trouble saying the word. But a lot of people say that this is where he got the idea of Dracula from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Sinners: Ryan Coogler. Patrick Weston Joyce, in his book The Origin and History of Irish Names of Places, which first appeared in 1869, speaks of Abhartach as \u201ca magician, and a dreadful tyrant, [who] after having perpetrated great cruelties on the people &#8230; was at last vanquished and slain by a neighbouring chieftain; some say by Fionn Mac Cumhail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHe was this Irish nobleman who couldn\u2019t be killed,\u201d Coogler says. \u201cI was doing that research, and it became very clear that this was a choice for this character\u2019s backstory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/review\/2025\/04\/17\/sinners-review-the-best-film-of-2025-so-far-right-down-to-the-celtic-vampires-singing-rocky-road-to-dublin\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sinners review: The best film of 2025 so far, right down to the Celtic vampires singing Rocky Road to DublinOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">As you may have gathered, Coogler, though gently spoken and thoughtful, is an intense sort of fellow. Raised in Oakland, California, as the son of a community organiser and probation counsellor, he did well academically at school, then initially entered college on a football scholarship. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">After graduating in finance, he moved on to the University of Southern California\u2019s school of cinematic arts. Acclaimed shorts eventually led to him shooting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/fruitvale-station-1.1820671\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/fruitvale-station-1.1820671\">Fruitvale Station<\/a> and to acclaim at Sundance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He is a thinker. And he brings that rigour to his ponderings of the relationship between the Irish and black communities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe were able to interrogate the absurd nature of racism in the Americas,\u201d he says. \u201cIt falls apart in so many different places. When you go back to certain areas you see how the concept of whiteness was fluid. When you look at certain groups of European immigrants they weren\u2019t considered white.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Italians? The Irish?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/2025\/12\/05\/the-50-best-films-of-2025-no-20-to-no-11\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The 50 best films of 2025: No 20 to No 11Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cYeah, Italians, Irish, Jewish folks, many groups from eastern Europe, Polish people,\u201d he says. \u201cIt was a very fluid concept. I wanted the vampires to retain their humanity. I wanted these to be the most human vampires ever put in fiction, if that makes sense. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI wanted the character to have a perspective on race that didn\u2019t match his phenotype. I wanted him to be extremely confusing for these black characters \u2013 and for the white ones. I wanted him to be constantly modulating and changing, because that\u2019s the immigrant story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This makes sense. Remmick, of the Irish undead, is saying \u201ccome with us\u201d to the black characters. That is both a welcome and a threat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">I joke with Coogler that, after seeing Sinners, I found the phrase \u201cRocky Road to Dublin!?!!?\u201d scrawled in my notebook. O\u2019Connell and his crew perform a blasting version of that Irish song \u2013 a famously angry tale of exile \u2013 while lurking outside the speakeasy. It\u2019s one of the most stirring moments from all cinema in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI find Rocky Road to Dublin to be such a fascinating song,\u201d Coogler says. \u201cBecause it\u2019s very upbeat and it\u2019s very powerful, especially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/luke-kelly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/luke-kelly\/\">Luke Kelly<\/a>\u2019s version. But, when you break down the lyrics, it\u2019s f**king sad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThat contrast is just like the blues. I can sing this and get fired up. But if I listen to what\u2019s happening to this character, it\u2019s got labour in there, it\u2019s got migration, it\u2019s got the longing for home. And it has affirmation of humanity. You know what I\u2019m saying? And he\u2019s about having a weapon to ward off ghosts and goblins. Ha ha!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sorrow and defiance together? Luke Kelly would have understood that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cYes, in lockstep with each other,\u201d he says. \u201cIt is an affirmation of humanity, saying, \u2018I\u2019m a f**king human being. There was genuine celebration in the African-American community when Black Panther landed so successfully in 2018. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The film scored the best opening box office ever for a black director and went on to become the first superhero film to be nominated for the best picture Oscar. Sinners proves he can have similar success with original material. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Is black representation in the film industry now close to what it should be?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cNo. No, probably not,\u201d he says, cautiously. \u201cI feel really fortunate to have made five movies that had theatrical releases. A lot of it for me was timing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI think if Fruitvale, my first film, had been made a year later, it probably would have been a different path for me. It would probably have been a streaming movie if it had been made a year later. That is the landscape now for young filmmakers coming up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">We will, before moving quietly on, note that this conversation about a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/warner-bros\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/warner-bros\/\">Warner Bros<\/a> film takes place shortly before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/netflix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/netflix\/\">Netflix<\/a> makes its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2025\/12\/05\/netflix-agrees-83bn-takeover-of-warner-bros-discovery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2025\/12\/05\/netflix-agrees-83bn-takeover-of-warner-bros-discovery\/\">enormous offer<\/a> for that giant of the industry. On a happier note, Coogler is now moving hopefully through the rapids of Oscar season. My understanding is that awards strategists \u2013 there really are such things \u2013 will be hanging over his shoulder, nudging him in this or that direction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThat\u2019s not really my place,\u201d he says. \u201cThe award strategists are more talking to other folks \u2013 marketing folks, people in the studio. I\u2019m just promoting the movie. What that means is I\u2019m just having conversations about a piece of filmmaking that I really love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He laughs contentedly. He has much to laugh about.
