And it isn&#8217;t because everyone is suddenly feeling lazy \u2014 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/aasm.org\/survey-results-adults-sleep-more-during-the-winter\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/aasm.org\/survey-results-adults-sleep-more-during-the-winter\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">studies<\/a> have shown that, on average, we sleep an extra 15-20 minutes more when the temperature drops.<\/p>\n<p>So does this mean that humans need to hibernate like other mammals? And what exactly is behind our deep drive to get more sleep at this time of year? It&#8217;s also when we do most of our dreaming.<\/p>\n<p>While the REM phase lasts only 10 minutes in the initial <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/wellness\/sleep\/sleep-cycles\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/wellness\/sleep\/sleep-cycles\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sleep cycles<\/a>, it gets longer (lasting up to an hour) as the night progresses.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heatherdarwallsmith.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.heatherdarwallsmith.com\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Heather Darwall Smith<\/a>, a UKCP-registered psychotherapist, insufficient REM sleep can lead to physical and cognitive issues. &#8220;Not getting enough REM sleep makes remembering things, solving problems, and regulating emotions harder.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-571794f3-73df-4b7a-843c-b8a0e2b3f843\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>How does REM sleep help us deal with shifting sleep patterns?<\/p>\n<p id=\"30892578-a5dd-4f33-a1a7-b582f9485b74\">We cycle through <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/wellness\/mattresses\/how-many-sleep-stages-are-there-and-which-is-the-best\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/wellness\/mattresses\/how-many-sleep-stages-are-there-and-which-is-the-best\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">four stages of sleep<\/a> during the night.
