Coverage will begin about 15 minutes before launch.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"cd9b049c-f2e6-44c1-9056-17057e6eafed\">Tonight&#8217;s launch will send a COSMO-SkyMed Second Generation satellite to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">low Earth orbit<\/a> for the Italian Space Agency and the Italian Ministry of Defence. The spacecraft will study Earth using synthetic aperture radar (SAR), gathering data at all times of day and in all weather conditions from an altitude of 385 miles (620 kilometers).<\/p>\n<p>COSMO-SkyMed Second Generation is a two-satellite network designed to &#8220;monitor the Earth for the sake of emergency prevention, strategy, scientific and commercial purposes, providing data on a global scale to support a variety of applications,&#8221; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/earth.esa.int\/eogateway\/missions\/cosmo-skymed-second-generation\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/earth.esa.int\/eogateway\/missions\/cosmo-skymed-second-generation\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to a European Space Agency explainer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Among those applications are &#8220;risk management, cartography, forest &amp; environment protection, natural resources exploration, land management, defense and security, maritime surveillance, food &amp; agriculture management,&#8221; the explainer adds.<\/p>\n<p>Two COSMO-SkyMed Second Generation satellites have launched to date \u2014 one in December 2019 atop a Soyuz rocket and another in January 2022 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-launch-italian-csg-2-satellite-january-2022\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-launch-italian-csg-2-satellite-january-2022\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on a Falcon 9<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p id=\"60c459be-14b9-4470-8d3e-ef969667a12c\">The liftoff will be the first of 2026 not just for SpaceX but for the global launch community.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s no surprise that SpaceX is breaking in the year. Elon Musk&#8217;s company launched a whopping <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/private-spaceflight\/spacex-shatters-its-rocket-launch-record-yet-again-167-orbital-flights-in-2025\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/private-spaceflight\/spacex-shatters-its-rocket-launch-record-yet-again-167-orbital-flights-in-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">165 orbital missions in 2025<\/a> \u2014 far more than any other entity, either commercial or governmental.
