Simply throw on some trainers and go, right?<\/p>\n<p>Then the year goes by, the resolution slowly goes down the drain and uh, maybe next year will be the time that we\u2019re running 10k\u2019s and eyeing up the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/news\/london-marathon\/\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"London Marathon\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"694a9a82e4b0582005c45b07\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"\/news\/london-marathon\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"feed\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">London Marathon<\/a> ballot.<\/p>\n<p>However, is there an age when we\u2019re simply too old to be trying to take up this sport? Isn\u2019t it going to be rougher on our knees as we age?<\/p>\n<p>Isn\u2019t running bad for the knees?<\/p>\n<p>Writing for <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/does-running-ruin-your-knees-and-how-old-is-too-old-to-start-261575\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"The Conversation\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"694a9a82e4b0582005c45b07\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/does-running-ruin-your-knees-and-how-old-is-too-old-to-start-261575\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Conversation<\/a>, Hunter Bennett, a Lecturer in Exercise Science, University of South Australia argues that actually, running could help our knees as we age. <\/p>\n<p>One way to think of this is to not think of our body as something that decays over time. Bennett explains: \u201cYour body isn\u2019t simply a pile of bones and cartilage that gets worn down with every step. It is a living dynamic system that grows and adapts in response to the loads that are placed upon it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With this in mind, he says that the more we use our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/walking-backwards-benefits_uk_69247121e4b0ea2d5e75b77f\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"knees\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"694a9a82e4b0582005c45b07\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"69247121e4b0ea2d5e75b77f\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">knees<\/a>, the more benefits we\u2019ll experience.<\/p>\n<p>He says: \u201cYour knee joint is incredibly strong and designed to move. The cartilage inside your knee is a strong, flexible, connective tissue that cushions and protects the bones of your knee joint.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is good evidence to show when someone\u2019s load is removed \u2013 for example, during prolonged bed rest or immobilisation \u2013 their bone and cartilage begins to deteriorate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This makes perfect sense. <\/p>\n<p> So, when are we too old for running?<\/p>\n<p>Bennett says: \u201cUnfortunately (at least to my knowledge) there is no strong evidence examining what happens when you pick up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/woman-runs-uk-coastline-for-charity_uk_69455481e4b06417616603a1\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"running\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"694a9a82e4b0582005c45b07\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"69455481e4b06417616603a1\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">running<\/a> later in life. However, other lines of research do suggest it is likely safe and effective.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA 2020 study demonstrated that older adults (65 years and older) who start <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7447006\/\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"high intensity jump training\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"694a9a82e4b0582005c45b07\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7447006\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">high intensity jump training<\/a> (known as \u201cplyometric\u201d training) not only see improvements in strength and function, but also find it safe and enjoyable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He went on to explain that these types of training lead to higher joint loads than running, giving us a fair indication that running later in life is safe.<\/p>\n<p>How to get started with running<\/p>\n<p>Bennett advises: \u201cLike any type of exercise, your muscles and joints need time to adapt to the new load that is being placed upon them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith this in mind, it\u2019s best to start with intervals where you walk for a short period, then jog for a short period.
