{"id":22800,"date":"2025-09-15T13:23:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-15T13:23:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/22800\/"},"modified":"2025-09-15T13:23:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-15T13:23:07","slug":"local-author-and-teachers-new-sci-fi-book-to-be-published-city-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/22800\/","title":{"rendered":"Local author and teacher&#8217;s new sci-fi book to be published | City &#038; State"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Imagine taking an evening walk with your son to Insomnia Cookies, only for him to turn the corner ahead of you and disappear without a trace.<\/p>\n<p>Author Craig Shaeffer\u2019s new book \u201cVEIL\u201d follows the story of high school teacher John Calhoun as invisible creatures begin abducting people, including Calhoun\u2019s very own son.<\/p>\n<p>Since the book is based in West Lafayette, places like the Memorial Union tunnels, Neil Armstrong Building, and even Von\u2019s are mentioned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVon\u2019s is the refuge that people use to hide from the aliens,\u201d said Shaeffer.<\/p>\n<p>Shaeffer did rename Von\u2019s in his book as \u201cThe Constant Reader Cafe\u201d because \u201cStephen King calls his readers constant readers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of Shaeffer\u2019s biggest inspirations is Stephen King as the first book he ever read was \u201cThe Tommy Knockers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>                    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdueexponent.org\/campus\/general_news\/student-transit-opinions\/article_5cb959fe-3fe9-43af-a6f1-3d5f859454d1.html\" class=\"tnt-asset-link\" aria-label=\"Three weeks of transit: Students share their opinions on Purdue&#x2019;s new campus buses\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>                &#13;<br \/>\n                        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAQAAAADCAQAAAAe\/WZNAAAAEElEQVR42mM8U88ABowYDABAxQPltt5zqAAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==\" alt=\"Three weeks of transit: Students share their opinions on Purdue&#x2019;s new campus buses\" class=\"img-responsive lazyload full default\" width=\"1662\" height=\"1247\" data- data-\/><br \/>\n                <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Shaeffer based Calhoun on himself with them both being teachers. While Shaeffer teaches film literature, creative writing, and English literature, Calhoun is a biology teacher.<\/p>\n<p>Calhoun\u2019s entire family is abducted by the aliens and he becomes desperate to find them. Then one day, he comes across a group of survivors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the survivors can see the aliens because of a really bad car accident and so their plan is to have experimental surgery to replicate the wound inside this guy\u2019s brain so they can see the creatures,\u201d Shaeffer said. \u201cThen they can find where their loved ones are being taken and can fight the creatures and hopefully get their loved ones back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>                        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAQAAAADCAQAAAAe\/WZNAAAAEElEQVR42mM8U88ABowYDABAxQPltt5zqAAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==\" alt=\"9\/14 Craig Shaeffer and VEIL cover\" class=\"img-responsive lazyload full default\" width=\"1247\" height=\"1663\" data- data-\/><\/p>\n<p>Local author and high school teacher Craig Shaeffer poses with the cover for his upcoming sci-fi novel &#8220;VEIL.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>                                    Paige Solon | Staff Reporter<\/p>\n<p>Shaeffer was hit with inspiration for his story when walking into Aldi one day and imagined a guy walking in the parking lot being \u201cpulled into the sky and disappearing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know why I thought of it but I just did and then everything else kind of grew out from there,\u201d explained Shaeffer.<\/p>\n<p>The process of writing \u201cVEIL\u201d began in late 2022 for Shaeffer and finished in 2023. The book was then purchased in 2024 by Blackstone Publishing and will be published on September 16th.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPublishing takes forever so it is just now coming out,\u201d said Shaeffer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery morning during the summer I will wake up and start writing by 8 o\u2019clock. I\u2019ll just drink coffee and write for about four and a half hours each day and write 3000-4000 words per day and that eventually turns into a novel,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Shaeffer also had to do vigorous research to make his story come alive and feel real.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI talked to a lot of people who were much smarter in science than I am and one of those people was Andy Smith, a science teacher at Westside,\u201d explained Shaeffer, \u201cShe helped me with so many facets like how something could be invisible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith also helped Shaeffer figure out the physiology of the alien creatures featured in \u201cVEIL\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe logically talked about the characteristics that most living creatures need to have and so we got to construct a really fearsome creature that is also kind of believable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shaeffer compares the aliens to an existing butterfly that has achieved almost complete invisibility.<\/p>\n<p>                    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdueexponent.org\/campus\/features\/non-stem-perspective\/article_df80d9f0-f237-11ef-92d1-5b21b7a87563.html\" class=\"tnt-asset-link\" aria-label=\"How non-STEM students navigate the divide at a STEM-focused campus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>                <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"How non-STEM students navigate the divide at a STEM-focused campus\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/67bbbf248ccd9.preview.jpg\" class=\"img-responsive  letterbox default\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1175\" height=\"1763\"\/><br \/>\n                <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Instead of using his usual moniker, Shaeffer writes under the pen name Jonathan Janz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy full name is Jonathan Craig Shaeffer and Craig Shaeffer is what I go by in my day to day life. So Jonathan comes from that and then my mother\u2019s maiden name was Janz. My grandparents helped raise me so it was really to honor them since they were so amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shaeffer has 18 other published books that fall under the realm of horror with historical gothic horror and creature horror (vampires, werewolves, etc.) being some variations of the genre Shaeffer has written.<\/p>\n<p>                        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAQAAAADCAQAAAAe\/WZNAAAAEElEQVR42mM8U88ABowYDABAxQPltt5zqAAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==\" alt=\"2\/13\/24 Craig Shaeffer's bookshelf\" class=\"img-responsive lazyload full default\" width=\"1763\" height=\"1175\" data- data-\/><\/p>\n<p>Junior-senior high school teacher Craig Shaeffer keeps a bookshelf stocked with hundreds of books for his students to read.<\/p>\n<p>                                    Exponent File Photo<\/p>\n<p>Along with \u201cVEIL\u201d, Shaeffer also has a short story being published in a Stephen King anthology by the publishing company Simon and Schuster.<\/p>\n<p>The short story \u201cLenora\u201d is based in the world of The Stand by Stephen King.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a super flu that kills almost everybody on earth,\u201d said Shaeffer. \u201cMy main character is one of the survivors and the opening scene is this preacher who\u2019s dying brings a little baby antelope in a wagon to the survivor\u2019s house because he can\u2019t take care of the animal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVEIL\u201d is also being shopped by Shaeffer\u2019s movie team, Lit Entertainment, so it could potentially be turned into a movie in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVEIL\u201d will be available in ebook, audiobook, and paperback at places like Von\u2019s, Barnes and Noble, and Amazon.
