{"id":228546,"date":"2026-01-05T13:28:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T13:28:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/228546\/"},"modified":"2026-01-05T13:28:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T13:28:09","slug":"a-main-road-into-limerick-city-has-a-transport-priority-lane-but-no-buses-to-serve-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/228546\/","title":{"rendered":"A main road into Limerick city has a transport priority lane &#8211; but no buses to serve it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A MAJOR road into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/section\/576\/motoring-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Limerick<\/a> city has a transport priority lane for buses despite local bus services for that area not being in place.<\/p>\n<p>The construction of a number of new housing estates has seen the number of people living along Condell Road on the city\u2019s northside explode.<\/p>\n<p>But Sinn Fein councillor Sharon Benson says many feel \u201cisolated\u201d due to the lack of a scheduled bus service for the area.<br \/>This comes despite a bus lane long being in place there.<\/p>\n<p>READ MORE:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/news\/home\/1974997\/almost-50-years-of-service-to-county-limerick-hospital-celebrated-with-retirement.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Almost 50 years of service to County Limerick hospital celebrated with retirement<\/a><\/p>\n<p>BusConnects, which is expected to see a raft of new routes introduced to Limerick will not be in place until next year, 2027.<\/p>\n<p>Cllr Benson says residents can\u2019t wait that long. \u201cThere are lot of people out there still not driving and the distance to schools is a big problem for them. I\u2019ve spoken with people in the area and it\u2019s their biggest issue,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The northside councillor pointed out the local primary schools are at least a 30 minute walk from the new estates, with secondary schools 45 minutes of a trek.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCondell Road is the only road on the northside that has a bus lane &#8211; but does not have a bus service,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Council is to write to the National Transport Authority (NTA), which is responsible for bus services in Limerick, to get it to put a service in place for the area immediately.<\/p>\n<p>This came after Cllr Benson\u2019s motion received widespread support.<\/p>\n<p>Cllr Shane Hickey-O\u2019Mara, Social Democrats, seconded the motion, adding: \u201cThe population has gone up by so much in that part of the city and will keep going up, and they don\u2019t have access to the most basic of facilities.
