{"id":229077,"date":"2026-01-05T19:52:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T19:52:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/229077\/"},"modified":"2026-01-05T19:52:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T19:52:08","slug":"south-kesteven-households-to-start-food-waste-recycling-in-april-with-new-food-caddy-containers-being-delivered-next-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/229077\/","title":{"rendered":"South Kesteven households to start food waste recycling in April with new food caddy containers being delivered next month"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Residents will get new food caddy containers next month in preparation for a major overhaul to food recycling which begins this spring.<\/p>\n<p>Those living in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lincsonline.co.uk\/news\/politics\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">South Kesteven<\/a> will begin to recycle food waste from Monday, April 13, as part of a new council initiative.<\/p>\n<p>The scheme comes in response to national requirements aimed at improving recycling, cutting the waste which ends up at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lincsonline.co.uk\/news\/politics\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lincolnshire Energy from Waste<\/a> disposal facility, and reducing landfill waste.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 1914 1070\" alt=\"Food waste being collected as part of the new recycling service. Photo: SKDC<\/p>\n<p>Every household will receive two caddies in February: a small five-litre indoor caddy for daily use and a larger 23-litre outdoor caddy for the weekly collection.<\/p>\n<p>An initial roll of caddy liners will also be supplied, making it easier for residents to get started.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 4000 2230\" alt=\"SKDC's food waste collection vehicles in operation. Photo: SKDC<\/p>\n<p>Plate scrapings, peelings, tea bags, coffee grounds, cooked food, meat, fish, dairy, fruit and vegetables can all be placed in the indoor caddy and transferred to the outdoor container for collection.<\/p>\n<p>SKDC stresses that food should be removed from packaging and liquids like milk should not be included.<\/p>\n<p>Collected food waste will be sent to a specialist anaerobic digestion facility in Lincolnshire, where it will be converted into nutrient-rich fertiliser for local agriculture and biogas to generate renewable electricity for homes and businesses.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 1275 871\" alt=\"New food waste caddy pictured next to a standard black household bin. Photo: SKDC<\/p>\n<p>The scheme not only supports environmental sustainability but also encourages households to better understand and reduce the food they discard, potentially saving money and lowering council waste management costs.<\/p>\n<p>Cabinet member for environment and waste, Rhys Baker (Ind), said: \u201cMany residents are already enthusiastic recyclers and I am sure they will embrace this new system to see where it can take us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a simple change with a powerful impact.
