\n\tSometimes, the toughest act to follow is yourself. Such is the case for Nikki Glaser<\/a>. The actress and comedian almost singlehandedly revived the Golden Globes<\/a> telecast last year with a hosting gig<\/a> that did the near-impossible feat of pleasing a room full of A-listers and seemingly everyone<\/a> who watched on TV. Now, she just has to do it again.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI could do it tonight and feel like I have a solid monologue,\u201d Glaser said over Zoom earlier Tuesday morning. \u201cBut I still have five days to write more, so I\u2019m looking forward to what it becomes. There\u2019s a lot that can happen in the final moments when the writing team and I are all kind drained of any creativity. That\u2019s when it starts to get loopy and weird. I\u2019m excited for what comes out of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t***<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the most interesting or surprising feedback you\u2019ve gotten in the year since you first hosted?<\/p>\n

\n\tThat it was all positive. (Laughs.) It kind of tripped me up, man. Usually, you do something and there\u2019s a couple of people who don\u2019t like what you did \u2014 or a couple flaws you can find \u2014 and it was universally appreciated and well-reviewed. I\u2019m not used to that. I don\u2019t like that. It only sets me up for failure. And I avoided watching it again, because I lived it. But I just went back and watched it two days ago just to remind myself of what I liked, what I didn\u2019t like. Well, damn, I kind of nailed it. And it scares me, because that was kind of lightning in a bottle. I got really lucky with some of the nominees. Everything worked out. So it\u2019s a high bar<\/a>. I\u2019m kind of screwed.<\/p>\n

\n\tWait a minute. When you watched it two days ago, that wasn\u2019t the first time you\u2019d ever seen it?<\/p>\n

\n\tYeah! I don\u2019t like watching. If I see it come across my phone, I scroll away as quick as possible. I love performing and I love the feeling I get when I do it, especially in these one-shot moments. I just didn\u2019t want to fill my head with anything else that I was like, \u201cOh, I wish I would\u2019ve done this differently.\u201d But I didn\u2019t have that feeling when I watched it. I was like, \u201cOh, that was pretty good. I\u2019ve got to do that again.\u201d And I learned a lot from watching it. You got to keep it fast paced. You got to look like you\u2019re having fun. I was having fun last year and it showed.<\/p>\n

\n\tSigning on to return so early, I imagine, is a blessing and a curse. When did you first write down an idea of something you might include?<\/p>\n

\n\tHonestly, I did not allow myself until Dec. 1. I taped my special at the end of October. Then I went right into Saturday Night Live. After SNL, I needed to take the month off and just breathe. Dec. 1, right after Thanksgiving, we got right into it. The nominees don\u2019t come out until Dec. 8, so that\u2019s when really you get cooking.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhat did you learn from your first experience hosting SNL<\/a>?<\/p>\n

\n\tIt was the greatest thing I\u2019ve ever done. It was like summer camp. It really felt like being back in middle school and putting on plays \u2014\u00a0and I say in middle school because I didn\u2019t get cast in high school plays. What was really remarkable to me about SNL is that they treat each show like it\u2019s the 50th anniversary. I felt like everyone was as excited as I am. And what I learned from how I usually do things is that I had to let go a lot. I had to realize I don\u2019t know better than any of these people and I can suggest things, but in the end, just let go and don\u2019t be scared to be foolish. So much of stand up is looking cool and being yourself. I don\u2019t get too much into characters and making myself look silly, and I felt like that was a really great opportunity to try stuff I hadn\u2019t done before and admit that I\u2019m kind of a novice in this world. And that\u2019s OK. I can\u2019t wait to do that again.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen are you not going to feel like a novice? You\u2019ve done so much.<\/p>\n

\n\tI don\u2019t know when it will click in that I haven\u2019t tricked anyone. That imposter syndrome is just so embedded in my soul. I think more people should have it, though. We\u2019ve all been so lucky. Anyone who\u2019s made a career in this has had an extreme amount of luck \u2014 just knowing the right people, impressing the right people, making a good impression in a moment where they didn\u2019t know it mattered. So, instead of thinking, \u201cI don\u2019t deserve this,\u201d I\u2019m trying to turn imposter syndrome into, \u201cI\u2019m so grateful that this is my life.\u201d And I think it\u2019s good to have going into the Globes. I just watched this clip of Ricky Gervais talking at the Globes. He wanted to remind himself he\u2019s like the court jester. The court jester is allowed to make fun of the king and queen because he\u2019s so clearly not the king and queen and they know he\u2019s not. He\u2019s one of the plebes. It\u2019s good that I know I\u2019m not one of these A-listers and that I don\u2019t feel like I\u2019m one of them. That gives me license to make fun of them a little bit more.<\/p>\n

\n\tDidn\u2019t they execute court jesters?<\/p>\n

\n\tI look forward to that. Die young, as long as I look good with my head rolling down the whatever.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhere are you with your homework? Have you watched everything?<\/p>\n

\n\tYou can\u2019t watch everything. And you certainly can\u2019t listen to all the podcasts. God. But I\u2019ve watched most of everything. I still have a couple more to go \u2014\u00a0Train Dreams, The Secret Agent. I\u2019m not someone who can really sit down and watch something. My big project this year was The Wire, and I wish that was nominated. That\u2019s all I want to talk about. But I saw One Battle twice. I loved it so much. Marty Supreme<\/a>? Insane. It\u2019s a really good year for movies. Song Sung Blue<\/a>? Loved it.<\/p>\n

\n\tI haven\u2019t seen it yet, but I\u2019m aware of the twist\u2026<\/p>\n

\n\tGear up! But I think it\u2019s so underrated. I think the marketing did it kind of dirty. People are just like, \u201cWhat is this? \u201d It seems like almost a parody, but it\u2019s awesome. Hugh Jackman should have been nominated. I thought he was incredible. I hope Kate Hudson wins.
Outside of the writer\u2019s room, who are you seeking counsel from right now? Who do you run material by?<\/p>\n

\n\tI saw Judd Apatow last night at a gig and said, \u201cPlease send me any notes you have. \u201d He seemed to have no notes, but he\u2019s someone who\u2019s hosted the Directors Guild Awards<\/a>. He\u2019s done this before. Who else? Steve Martin sent in a joke through one of my writers. That was so nice. Then he said afterwards, \u201cActually, tell her: Don\u2019t do that joke. That\u2019s too far.\u201d And he was right. I did love the joke, but I don\u2019t think I could say that.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhat was it?<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t really dirty or anything. It was just a political joke that probably isn\u2019t right for the show. But I love that he corrected and was like, \u201cTell her, actually don\u2019t do that joke.\u201d I\u2019m running around town, doing these sets, so I\u2019m getting constant feedback from comedians who are writing me jokes and tags and suggesting. Everyone knows I\u2019m very approachable when it comes to this stuff. I\u2019ve had waitresses be like, \u201cI have an idea for this joke.\u201d Even my family. My sister just sent in a joke, because I was saying we were struggling for a Julia Roberts<\/a> joke. She said we need Erin Brockovich to open up the Epstein file. She would\u2019ve given us to them unredacted. That\u2019s a good angle. We\u2019re not going to do that, but that\u2019s not bad. Then she said something like, \u201cJulia Roberts is here tonight. She\u2019s nominated for After the Hunt. She almost passed on the role, but the director was like, \u2018Big mistake, huge.\u2019\u201d It\u2019s not the best joke. She did admit that. But I couldn\u2019t even do it because I\u2019ve referenced, \u201cBig mistake, huge,\u201d and people don\u2019t know it. It\u2019s not Gen Z. I\u2019m 41 and even millennials have forgotten it.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe erosion of the monoculture must make a task like this even more difficult.<\/p>\n

\n\tIt\u2019s so impossible. I don\u2019t usually have these \u201cwoe is me!\u201d pity sessions, but lately\u2026 And people always remind me that hosting an awards show is the hardest gig. I say, \u201cNo, it\u2019s actually so fun!\u201d \u00a0What\u2019s hard is that people don\u2019t watch things anymore. Even Marty Supreme, do people not even know that\u2019s about ping-pong? People don\u2019t know what the hell Jay Kelly<\/a> is. They know George Clooney. So, you end up making a lot of jokes about the advertisements and the endorsements these people do. People might not know Kevin Hart\u2019s special, but they know he\u2019s popping up talking about DraftKings.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut is that enough?<\/p>\n

\n\tYou have to find what everyone knows. Honestly, there isn\u2019t anything that everyone watches. There was Wicked was last year. Wicked: For Good, not as many people saw, so there\u2019s not as much to say about it. We\u2019ll be in the writers room and people will be like, \u201cWe have to talk about Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet saying \u2018Schwap!\u2019 or something<\/a>.\u201d That didn\u2019t show up on my feed! I have no idea what you\u2019re talking about.\u201d And I\u2019m plugged in. How did that miss me entirely? And that was half and half of our room. It\u2019s either all you\u2019re seeing or you\u2019re not seeing it at all. I did a Venezuela reference [at a show] last night and half the crowd is like, \u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d It\u2019s not showing up. People aren\u2019t even getting news, man. It\u2019s depressing.<\/p>\n

Knowing that Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet and Adam Sandler<\/a> will again be in the same room<\/a>, how strong is the temptation for you\u2026<\/p>\n

It was strong at first. Then I thought, I don\u2019t want to bug Adam Sandler again. \u201cCould you do a bit with me?\u201d I just want him to have a nice evening where he can relax. It\u2019s not off the table yet, but I\u2019m trying to think of some other kind of interaction I can have with someone because that\u2019s what I really liked about that monologue last year. I loved that moment. It felt spontaneous and it was. We kind of gave him a heads up that I\u2019ll call on him to do something, but it wasn\u2019t choreographed or rehearsed. I want to have another moment like that. There\u2019s fun people in the room this year \u2014 Kevin Hart, Amy Poehler, even Kathy Bates licking that paddle<\/a> the other day! I walked into the writers room like, \u201cWell, Kathy Bates is down!\u201d There are certain people I\u2019m thinking of messing with, but I don\u2019t know that I\u2019ll do a reprise of Chalamet and Sandler.<\/p>\n

\n\tIf having that podcast category is what it takes to get Amy Poehler in the room, I\u2019ll take it.
She is the queen of the cutaway shot. I can\u2019t wait to see what she does.<\/p>\n
