KTSM<\/a>) \u2014 The El Paso Zoo\u2019s veterinary team is providing care to a lethargic bald eagle, according to the zoo\u2019s Facebook post on Wednesday, Dec. 31.<\/p>\nSomeone first reported the sick bird to the Gila Wildlife Rescue in Silver City, New Mexico.<\/p>\n

The veterinary team received the eagle and started to provide medical care. The bird is \u201cextremely thin\u201d and anemic \u2014 low red blood cell levels \u2014 which is causing weakness and fatigue, according to the Facebook post.<\/p>\n
Additionally, no broken bones were found during the eagle\u2019s exam. A blood sample and an oral swab were sent to a lab for infection or toxic lead levels, but results are still pending, according to the El Paso Zoo.<\/p>\n
The zoo will continue to provide supportive care and a gradual, balanced diet.<\/p>\n
\u201cSometimes eating too much, too soon, can cause a metabolic chaos in emaciated animals (and people), making their condition rapidly worsen,\u201d according to the post.<\/p>\n
The El Paso Zoo said its Raptor Rehabilitation Program has cared for 122 sick, injured or orphaned wild birds of prey.<\/p>\n
