Many are treated through psychological therapies or with medication. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">In an updated review using the Cochrane method, researchers analysed randomised controlled trials that evaluated exercise to treat depression compared with no intervention, psychological therapy, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/life-style\/health-fitness\/article\/antidepressants-what-you-need-to-know-jjqr92bz6?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=AWEtsqdcEfdA7eU3Z0cyNFVpsiideI9jNFrL8u7m16Wo-6_jUpnGaGLIHHF09wMQ1g8%3D&amp;gaa_ts=695ea5b2&amp;gaa_sig=2ZMuvS7NSPs1UVl4TWT3m-UPqFslBcDqpsukvcg3nO_ntNr6aHIsufAusM83j2U5XFoaLPRPz3TZpOVbSizBdQ%3D%3D\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">antidepressant medications<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Exercising was found to have a \u201cmoderate\u201d benefit in reducing symptoms compared with no treatment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Ten trials compared exercise with therapies. Scientists concluded that \u201cthere is probably little to no difference\u201d between the effect that either had on depression.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"African American male running on a treadmill at the gym.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/\/ea8f556c-db7e-4e25-81a7-e6190dfaec14.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Moderate-intensity exercise was found to be more beneficial than vigorous exercise<\/p>\n<p>GETTY IMAGES<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Five of the studies included in the review compared physical activity with medications, finding \u201clittle to no difference\u201d in the effect on symptoms, with researchers adding that this effect was \u201cvery uncertain at long-term follow-up\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The team found that no single type of exercise trumped others, but did find that mixed programmes with both cardio and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/life-style\/health-fitness\/article\/krissy-cela-ilona-maher-strength-training-women-ccrb2lkrq?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=AWEtsqdDkJnXts7UNLgy4Hxbby_9hrHEsfRv73NHEQ3XVGLuMMKJf-H-m-DtqO8fHxI%3D&amp;gaa_ts=695ea5ec&amp;gaa_sig=P6DTrA01qWut_qWpBzm09kbt8it3PDT9thhVCj9nB7GY0D6ADFj03Ft7glyJ3pRq4ahZ3vauiZYVNkW3BqknCw%3D%3D\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">resistance training<\/a> were more effective than aerobic exercise alone. Moderate-intensity exercise was also found to be more beneficial than vigorous exercise, the team said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cOur findings suggest that exercise appears to be a safe and accessible option for helping to manage symptoms of depression,\u201d Professor Andrew Clegg, the lead author of the review, said.\u201cThis suggests that exercise works well for some people, but not for everyone, and finding approaches that individuals are willing and able to maintain is important.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cAlthough we\u2019ve added more trials in this update, the findings are similar,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n<p id=\"last-paragraph\" class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cExercise can help people with depression, but if we want to find which types work best, for who and whether the benefits last over time, we still need larger, high-quality studies.
