{"id":234025,"date":"2026-01-08T10:14:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T10:14:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/234025\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T10:14:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T10:14:08","slug":"services-for-those-close-to-death-overstretched-says-hospice-foundation-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/234025\/","title":{"rendered":"Services for those close to death \u2018overstretched\u2019, says hospice foundation \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">End-of-life services are \u201calready overstretched\u201d and will face further pressure in the decades ahead due to the State\u2019s ageing population unless capacity is increased, a new report states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hospice-foundation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hospice-foundation\/\">Irish Hospice Foundation <\/a>on Thursday published Dying, Death and Bereavement in Ireland 2026, which highlights several \u201careas of concern\u201d including communications around the end of a person\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">About 35,000 people die annually, according to Central Statistics Office (CSO). However, the number of deaths recorded annually is forecast to increase by 40 per cent to almost 49,000 over the next 20 years as the population ages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hospice-foundation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hospice-foundation\/\">The number of people dying in the Republic <\/a>from conditions that require general and specialist palliative care is set to rise by 57 per cent in the next two decades, from 25,669 to 40,355, the report notes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A lack of out-of-hours support for people receiving care towards the end of their life may be leading to an increase in people attending emergency departments when medical intervention is required, it adds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Over a five-year period between 2019 and 2023, almost 5,500 people died in or on the way to an emergency department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cInvestment in primary care to improve access to out-of-hours care for people, regardless of geography, finances, care setting or diagnosis, is crucial,\u201d the foundation said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSome hospital admissions will be necessary, but for others, alternative urgent care closer to home should be available to meet their needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There are 14 adult hospices in the Republic, with a combined total of 276 beds. However, there are several areas \u2013 namely the midlands and northeast \u2013 which have no adult hospices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Communication around death and subsequent planning were two areas highlighted by the foundation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">According to the report, two in three respondents to the 2023 National End of Life Survey said a relative or friend was not told by a healthcare professional that they were likely to die.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis lack of communication meant that the person dying missed opportunities to make appropriate arrangements and family members were not fully aware that their loved one\u2019s death was imminent,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The report quoted from one woman, whose mother, in her 70s, died in hospital, who said there were \u201cmixed messages about my mother\u2019s prognosis &#8230; If I had truly understood how unwell she was, I would have taken off more time from work to be with her.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The report notes there is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hospice-foundation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hospice-foundation\/\">no statutory right to bereavement leave in the Republic<\/a>, which means that employers have no legal obligation to offer time off to workers who are bereft. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Research by the foundation revealed that two out of three people recently bereaved were in employment, and more than half of those surveyed changed their working arrangements after a death. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The report includes a number of recommendations to improve end-of-life services, including the establishment of a register of advance healthcare directives, increasing conversations around death to reduce stigma and delivering hospices for the midlands and northeast regions \u201cwithout further delay\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Foundation chief executive Paula O\u2019Reilly said people countrywide deserve the opportunity to experience a good death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThat requires a set of supports and services that are wide ranging and effective,\u201d she said, adding that the report shows \u201ca need for urgent action and creative thinking across the board\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms O\u2019Reilly said the system is \u201ccreaking at the seams\u201d and as fatalities increase in the coming decades, \u201cextraordinary measures will be required to ensure that every death will continue to matter and to provide the level of supports available to those who are grieving\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"End-of-life services are \u201calready overstretched\u201d and will face further pressure in the decades ahead due to the State\u2019s&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":234026,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[34],"tags":[14787,103,397,396,61,60,119326],"class_list":{"0":"post-234025","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-healthcare","8":"tag-central-statistics-office","9":"tag-health","10":"tag-health-care","11":"tag-healthcare","12":"tag-ie","13":"tag-ireland","14":"tag-irish-hospice-foundation"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/234025","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=234025"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/234025\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/234026"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=234025"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=234025"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=234025"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
