Jessie Buckley<\/a> has says she was \u201cbrutalised\u201d on the BBC talent show I\u2019d Do Anything,\u00a0which she participated in as a teenager.<\/p>\n

Buckley\u2019s career began when she finished as runner-up on the Andrew Lloyd Webber-led talent show in 2008, when she was just 17 years old. Webber was searching for an unknown actress to play Nancy in a\u00a0West End production of Oliver!,\u00a0as well as a boy to play the title character. The show was won by Jodie Prenger, who went on to star in\u00a0Coronation Street\u00a0and has been involved in numerous touring theatre productions.<\/p>\n

The actress, who is currently starring opposite\u00a0Paul Mescal<\/a> in historical drama Hamnet, admitted that she was \u201cnot well fully\u201d and had depression at the time.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a lot that was really messed up,\u201d she told Vogue, pointing to \u201ca lot of body shaming and bringing me to femininity school. And I was growing into my body. I was 17. I was in a moment of discovery. As women, it\u2019s such unfair objectification.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI look back at it and I feel like, \u2018God, you\u2019re so brave.\u2019 I don\u2019t know if I\u2019d have that courage now. And I don\u2019t know if that was kind of innocence or ignorance.\u201d<\/p>\n

During her time on the show, footage was captured of Buckley being told by a male choreographer: \u201cWe\u2019ve got to get her to be much more ladylike, it\u2019s a real challenge\u2026 Come on, get your womanly head on.\u201d Meanwhile, a critique of her posture by judge Denise van Outen led to her being taught to provocatively walk in six-inch heels by\u00a0Chicago dancers.
In response, the BBC <\/a>pointed to its policies to ensure a duty of care for all who work with them, which it said had been improved over time. They added that complaints and concerns passed on to them\u00a0are treated \u201cwith the utmost care and seriousness\u201d.
Buckley also mentioned that she was asked to be Prenger\u2019s understudy but turned it down.<\/p>\n

In other news, Steven Spielberg<\/a> made a surprise appearance<\/a> at the London Film Festival premiere of Hamnet, praising the work of director Chlo\u00e9 Zhao. He serves as a producer on the film.<\/p>\n

Mescal stars as William Shakespeare and Buckley as his wife Agnes in the story of the loss of their young son Hamnet, which served as the inspiration for the tragedy Hamlet.\u00a0<\/p>\n
