Lee<\/a> is currently sailing on an icebreaker into Antarctica \u2014 and he\u2019s brought a lot of gear with him. <\/p>\n<p>In a recent video shared to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DTLpsD9AWgv\/?hl=en\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">Times\u2019 social media channels<\/a>, Lee details what he\u2019s taken with him for the two-month expedition aboard Araon, a South Korean ship. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very used to traveling,\u201d explains Lee, who spent five and a half months in Iraq during the war and covers global sporting events. <\/p>\n<p>But even the most well-traveled of people have rarely been to the world\u2019s most remote continent, Antarctica. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will be one of the highlights of my career,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/video\/climate\/100000010615476\/behind-the-scenes-with-our-photographer.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">says Lee.<\/a> \u201cI\u2019m really fortunate to be able to do what I love to do.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>    <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"@nytimes\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@nytimes?refer=embed\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">@nytimes<\/a> \u201cI have a lot of gear.\u201d Our photographer Chang W. Lee describes how he plans to capture a reporting trip to Antarctica from every angle, including with a long-range drone and a sound-triggered camera he hopes to use to capture a calving glacier. While he uses the Sony camera system, he talks mainly about the drones and remote cameras he\u2019s using on the trip. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll be using the [DJI] <a href=\"https:\/\/petapixel.com\/2025\/09\/17\/dji-mini-5-pro-has-a-bigger-sensor-better-gimbal-and-professional-features\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mini 5 pro<\/a> around the icebreaker because I don\u2019t need to go far away,\u201d says Lee. \u201cBut when I\u2019m on the ice, the wind will be stronger so I need to use the <a href=\"https:\/\/petapixel.com\/2025\/05\/13\/dji-mavic-4-pro-review-the-best-drone-for-most-pros-stays-on-top\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mavic 4 Pro<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Lee also has several smaller cameras, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/petapixel.com\/2024\/10\/22\/insta360-ace-pro-2-review-it-puts-other-action-cameras-on-notice\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Insta360 Ace Pro 2<\/a>, which he uses to capture \u201cblind spots\u201d \u2014 areas he physically cannot reach. <\/p>\n<p>The Times photographer also used sound triggers for his cameras, which he leaves around the ship in case an iceberg splits from a glacier and causes the camera to record something incredible. <\/p>\n<p>Nearly 40 scientists are aboard the Araon, which is heading for Antarctica\u2019s fastest-melting glaciers.
