{"id":235097,"date":"2026-01-08T23:57:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T23:57:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/235097\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T23:57:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T23:57:07","slug":"cork-man-who-swallowed-white-packet-before-drug-search-sentenced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/235097\/","title":{"rendered":"Cork man who swallowed white packet before drug search sentenced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"contextmenu internal_Body1st\">A man who was informed that he was about to be searched for drugs walked away from the garda, popped a white packet into his mouth and swallowed it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">At Cork District Court he was sentenced to one month in prison by Judge Catherine Ryan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">It was the fifth time that Dan Doherty, aged 29, of Cork Simon Community was convicted of obstructing a member of An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Sergeant John Dineen described at Cork District Court the encounter Garda Kevin Roche had with him on Wednesday, October 8 2025, on Gillabbey St, Cork.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Garda Roche informed Dan Doherty that he was going to be searched under the Misuse of Drugs Act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Dan Doherty walked away from Garda Roche and proceeded to place a small white package into his mouth and swallow it, impeding Garda Roche in carrying out a search.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cDan Doherty then opened his mouth showing Garda Roche the package was gone. He was arrested,\u201d Sgt Dineen said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The defendant had 103 previous convictions, including the four counts for obstruction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Diarmuid Kelleher, his solicitor, said: \u201cUnfortunately, he fell into addiction and homelessness.
