While we often see the term used in conversations about expensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/health\/a65538870\/biohacks-for-health-that-really-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/health\/a65538870\/biohacks-for-health-that-really-work\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"biohacks\" data-node-id=\"2.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">biohacks<\/a> and trendy new treatments, there\u2019s also now considerable research emerging around how exercise can have a positive effect on biological age (how old your cells and systems are compared with your chronological age). <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">And one type of exercise that arguably has a much lower barrier to entry than other fitness activities? Jogging. As well as being pretty cheap, there\u2019s more good news: it can have a potentially powerful effect on biological age.  <\/p>\n<p>Related StoryWhat did the study find?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10572212\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10572212\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"9.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> involving more than 4,000 participants, researchers found that adults who jogged or ran at least 75 minutes per week (self-reported over one month) had, on average, a biological age 12 years younger than those who didn\u2019t do any jogging or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/running\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/running\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"running\" data-node-id=\"9.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">running<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The authors of the paper, published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, found that the adults who reported at least 75 weekly minutes of jogging\/running had significantly longer leukocyte telomeres than those who did none at all. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Leukocyte what\u2019s, you say? Leukocyte telomeres are the protective caps on the ends of chromosomes in white blood cells, used in science as a key marker of biological age. \u2018Longer telomeres are predictive of longer life, and healthy lifestyles are associated with longer telomeres,\u2019 say the researchers.   <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">How can they know that the younger biological age is linked to running? Well, even after accounting for demographic factors (including age, sex, income) and lifestyle\/medical factors (including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a63320508\/bmi-vo2-health-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a63320508\/bmi-vo2-health-study\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"BMI\" data-node-id=\"18.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">BMI<\/a>, smoking, diabetes, heart disease and other physical activity), the researchers still identified a significant statistical difference.  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"20\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">However, interestingly, adults who did some jogging or running didn\u2019t display significantly different telomere lengths compared with either non-joggers or those who did at least 75 minutes. Armed with science like this, we can make informed decisions about how we use our time to improve our long-term health. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"45\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">While the study said that participants\u2019 reported jogs had to be at least 10 minutes, only overall weekly minutes were measured.
