During an interview with the Oxford Union<\/a>, O\u2019Brien shared his thoughts about comics that use their art to criticize the Trump administration. Although he has no problem with them calling Trump out, he believes that comics should use their art effectively to channel their anger, rather than just cursing Trump all the time.<\/p>\n He said, \u201cSome comics go the route of, \u2018I\u2019m gonna just say F Trump all the time,\u2019 or that\u2019s their comedy. But now I think, you\u2019re being co-opted. Because\u2019 you\u2019re so angry you\u2019ve been lulled. It\u2019s like a siren leading you into the rocks.\u201d<\/p>\n He thinks that some comics are missing the point of their art, which is to make their audience laugh, and have just restricted themselves to channeling anger on stage. O\u2019Brien added, \u201cYou\u2019ve been lulled into just saying \u2018F Trump. F Trump. F Trump. Screw this guy,\u2019 and I think you\u2019ve now put down your best weapon, which is being funny, and you\u2019ve exchanged it for anger.\u201d<\/p>\n Speaking about what he believes is the most effective solution to use the craft for raising voices, he explained, \u201cYou just have to find a way to channel that anger, because good art will always be a perfect weapon against power, but if you\u2019re just screaming and you\u2019re just angry, you\u2019ve lost your best tool in the toolbox.\u201d<\/p>\n In a 2023 interview, O\u2019Brien discussed why making jokes about Trump is difficult in a conversation with On With Kara Swisher<\/a>. He said, \u201cYou can\u2019t parody something that already has that crazy, irregular shape. It\u2019s not possible. So I always thought that when Trump came along, what a lot of people have to revert to is: \u2018Doesn\u2019t he suck? I hate that guy.
