Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship announced that a deer was taken within the province\u2019s established <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/chronic-wasting-disease\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chronic wasting disease<\/a> management zone in the Kootenay region.<\/p>\n<p>All confirmed cases in B.C. to date have been identified through ongoing surveillance efforts.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/national.jpg\" alt=\"Get the day's top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet daily National news<\/p>\n<p>Get the day&#8217;s top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.<\/p>\n<p>Chronic wasting disease, which was first detected in B.C. in January, 2024, is a fatal neurological illness that affects cervids, including deer, elk, moose and caribou, and poses a long-term risk to wildlife populations and ecosystem health. There is no known cure.<\/p>\n<p>The province says it is working closely with First Nations, hunters, and local and federal governments to monitor the disease and reduce the risk of further spread.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The disease spreads through direct contact and contaminated environments.
