(Photo by Jakub Porzycki/NurPhoto via Getty Images)

NurPhoto via Getty Images

Wordle is a daily word puzzle game where your goal is to guess a hidden five-letter word in six tries or fewer. After each guess, the game gives feedback to help you get closer to the answer:

Green: The letter is in the word and in the correct spot.Yellow: The letter is in the word, but in the wrong spot.Gray: The letter is not in the word at all.

Use these clues to narrow down your guesses. Every day brings a new word, and everyone around the world is trying to solve the same puzzle. Some Wordlers also play Competitive Wordle against friends, family, the Wordle Bot or even against me, your humble narrator. See rules for Competitive Wordle toward the end of this post.

Today’s Wordle Hints And AnswerWordle Bot’s Starting Word: SLATEMy Starting Word Today: CLOUT (175 words left)The Hint: Subatomic particleThe Clue: This Wordle has two vowels in a row.

Okay, spoilers below! You can check your Wordle score with Wordle Bot right here.

CLOUT wasn’t a very good opener today, leaving me with one yellow “U” and 175 possible solutions. SUPER was . . . not super, but not terrible and MURKY cut my options down to just two: QUARK and QUIRK. I was pretty sure we’d had QUIRK before (we don’t get a lot of QU Wordles) so I went with QUARK. Thank goodness my memory isn’t completely shot!

Competitive Wordle Score

Today’s Wordle Bot

Screenshot: Erik Kain

Once again, the Wordle Bot and I tie with 4 guesses apiece. That’s 0 points for both of us, and our January totals do not budge.

Erik: 7 points

Wordle Bot: 4 points

How To Play Competitive WordleGuessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points. If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Enjoy!Today’s Wordle Etymology

A quark is a fundamental subatomic particle that combines with other quarks to form hadrons such as protons and neutrons; quarks carry fractional electric charge and are bound together by the strong nuclear force.

The word quark was borrowed into physics by Murray Gell-Mann in 1964 from James Joyce’s novel Finnegans Wake, where the phrase “Three quarks for Muster Mark!” appears. Joyce likely intended it as an onomatopoeic sound, echoing the cry of a seabird, and possibly playing on the German Quark, meaning “curd” or “nonsense.”

Be sure to follow me for all your daily puzzle-solving guides, TV show and movie reviews and more here on this blog!

How to solve today’s Wordle.
