{"id":240105,"date":"2026-01-11T21:54:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-11T21:54:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/240105\/"},"modified":"2026-01-11T21:54:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T21:54:10","slug":"eu-seeking-farage-clause-in-brexit-reset-agreement-with-uk-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/240105\/","title":{"rendered":"EU seeking \u2018Farage clause\u2019 in Brexit \u2018reset\u2019 agreement with UK \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\/\">European Union<\/a> is reportedly demanding guarantees the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-kingdom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-kingdom\/\">UK<\/a> will compensate the bloc if a future government reneges on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/brexit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/brexit\/\">Brexit<\/a> \u201creset\u201d agreement British prime minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/keir-starmer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/keir-starmer\/\">Keir Starmer<\/a> is currently negotiating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The termination clause is a stark reminder of the painful and costly divorce in which the EU set up a colossal \u20ac5.4 billion fund to help its member states cope with the disruption caused by the UK\u2019s exit in 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">According to the Financial Times, a draft text of an agreement on agriculture trade, aimed at removing post-Brexit checks on farm produce, calls for any party pulling out of the agreement to cover the cost of reinstating border and infrastructure controls in the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Nicknamed the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nigel-farage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nigel-farage\/\">Farage<\/a> clause\u201d by EU diplomats, it is seen in some quarters as a means of ensuring the bloc is not left out of pocket should the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/reform-uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/reform-uk\">Reform UK<\/a> party leader win a general election and make real his threat to cancel any UK-EU sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) agreement.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Leader of Reform UK Nigel Farage. Photograph: Leon Neal\/Getty <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, UK sources dismissed this notion, saying such a clause was routine in international deals and was written \u201cto work both ways\u201d, and would therefore also force the EU to compensate the UK if it backed out of the deal in future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A UK Labour Party source said: \u201cExit provisions are a basic staple of any international trade agreement. Pretending these routine legal contingencies constitute a democratic outrage [is] frankly exhausting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Negotiations on the SPS deal have not yet started but are due to commence this month. They may take months to complete, however, as the topic is one of the most complicated in the reset package that also includes a return to Erasmus, which was agreed before Christmas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A deal on carbon dioxide emissions on goods exported to the EU has also proved to be complicated. Hopes that Labour could secure an agreement on the carbon border adjustment mechanism before Christmas came to nothing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Anand Menon, the director of UK in a Changing Europe, said: \u201cWe shouldn\u2019t be surprised that the EU is playing hardball. After all, they have decided that we need these agreements more than they do.
