Kennedy Jr. says his diet message is clear: &#8220;Eat real food.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That was his main mantra during a White House press briefing on the new <a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/rfk-new-dietary-guidelines-5-changes-2026-1?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Dietary Guidelines for Americans;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Dietary Guidelines for Americans<\/a>, released Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The new guidelines feature an <a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/old-food-pyramid-vs-new-rfk-1980-1992-myplate-2026-1?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:inverted pyramid;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">inverted pyramid<\/a>, with protein, dairy, and so-called &#8220;healthy fats&#8221; as the foundational corner of the new American diet.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"new pyramid\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1030\" height=\"916\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"standard-img w-full w-full h-auto\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/7c43c3acdfc8d02b1e4d1b2bc6650ac1.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Protein, dairy, and &#8216;healthy&#8217; fats are the foundation for RFK Jr.&#8217;s new pyramid.realfood.gov<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Protein and <a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/greek-doctor-how-to-eat-for-health-longevity-on-budget-2024-12?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:healthy fats;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">healthy fats<\/a> are essential, and were wrongly discouraged in prior dietary guidelines,&#8221; Kennedy said.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re trying to eat healthier, the problem isn&#8217;t that you need more fat \u2014 it&#8217;s that &#8220;healthy fat&#8221; is a vague term that means very different things depending on the source.<\/p>\n<p>But what is a healthy fat, exactly? Here&#8217;s how nutrition experts say to tell the difference, and how to use that information when you shop, cook, and eat.<\/p>\n<p>A &#8216;healthy fat&#8217; isn&#8217;t just about fat \u2014 it&#8217;s about the whole food<img alt=\"olive tree\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1242\" height=\"828\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"standard-img w-full w-full h-auto\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/46f16d1a5036144342f187025c371bf0.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Olive oil is a healthy fat that everyone can agree on. Others aren&#8217;t so clear cut.Philipp von Ditfurth\/picture alliance via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The new federal guidelines don&#8217;t provide a strict definition of &#8220;healthy&#8221; fat, only saying that healthy fats come from whole foods.<\/p>\n<p>Business Insider reached out to the Department of Health and Human Services multiple times, asking for a clear definition of &#8220;healthy&#8221; fat, but didn&#8217;t get an answer.<\/p>\n<p>Typically, when nutritionists talk about healthy fat, what they mean is sources that have:<\/p>\n<p>More unsaturated fat and less saturated fat<\/p>\n<p>Other nutrients traveling with the fat<\/p>\n<p>Take olives. An olive is a fruit that includes a mix of both unsaturated and \u2014 to a much lesser extent \u2014 saturated fats. It also has other nutrients in it, including fiber, iron, and vitamin E, plus plant chemicals called polyphenols, which are <a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/simple-longevity-tricks-to-improve-diet-routine-2025-2?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:good for your brain;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">good for your brain<\/a>. That&#8217;s why <a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/replacing-butter-with-olive-oil-could-reduce-death-risk-study-2022-2?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:olive oil;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">olive oil<\/a> is widely regarded as a healthy choice.<\/p>\n<p>The same goes for <a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/high-fiber-foods-costco-mediterranean-diet-dietitian-recommendations-2025-8?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:chia seeds;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">chia seeds<\/a>. They&#8217;re high in omega-3 fatty acids, an essential fatty acid that we need to consume because we can&#8217;t make it on our own. They&#8217;re naturally low in saturated fat, and also provide other nutritional benefits, including decent doses of both fiber and protein.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/blue-zone-nutrition-meal-plan-2024-7?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Walnuts;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Walnuts<\/a> provide another great example. Until the 1990s, they were thought to be bad for your heart, due to their high fat content. It turns out the opposite is true: walnuts are packed with polyunsaturated omega-3s, making them actively good for your heart.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Joan Sabat\u00e9, who pioneered that walnut research in the 90s, said the key is to think about your fats in a broader context, not just focusing on one metric.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not only the type of fat, but the source of the fat, and how the fat is together with [other nutrients],&#8221; Sabat\u00e9, a <a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/blue-zone-nutrition-meal-plan-2024-7?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Blue Zone;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Blue Zone<\/a> epidemiologist who directs the Center for Nutrition, Lifestyle and Disease Prevention at Loma Linda University, told Business Insider.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s the deal with saturated fat?<img alt=\"buttered bread\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1242\" height=\"828\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"standard-img w-full w-full h-auto\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1d182abbec1eef94fb5332733e5f1581.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Butter is a classic example of a food that&#8217;s high in saturated fat. Fine, in moderation.ArtMarie\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Unveiling the new guidelines, Kennedy said, &#8220;We are ending the war on saturated fats.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The new food pyramid features beef, butter, and whole milk high up.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Eating a little bit of animal products is good,&#8221; Sabat\u00e9 said. Red meat and <a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/cheese-benefits-for-your-heart-cheese-matrix-2018-8?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:full-fat dairy;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">full-fat dairy<\/a> are packed with nutrients like vitamin B12 and iron, for example, which is hard to find in plants. Experts agree that <a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/why-debate-around-saturated-fat-and-health-is-so-confusing-2020-8?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:a little saturated fat;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">a little saturated fat<\/a> is not that bad for your body.<\/p>\n<p>Still, it&#8217;s controversial that the new guidelines front-load meat and animal products as &#8220;healthy&#8221; fats, and mention them first.<\/p>\n<p>Meat and dairy contain significantly more saturated fat than plants like olives and avocados. Research has linked diets rich in red meat and dairy to a higher incidence of chronic health issues, including heart disease and cancer. Animal products are also more pro-inflammatory than whole grains and vegetables.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That is not the way to go,&#8221; Sabat\u00e9 said, echoing concerns that many health experts shared this week.<\/p>\n<p>(Plus, the new guidelines still recommend limiting your saturated fat consumption to 10% of total daily calories, which means you can&#8217;t actually live on a diet of butter, red meat, and cream.)<\/p>\n<p>The takeaway: How to apply this to your diet<img alt=\"drizzle olive oil\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1242\" height=\"828\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"standard-img w-full w-full h-auto\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/d43428c25ebb91e670b12a4637af01e0.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Fat packs a punch, more than doubling the calories per gram of a protein or carbohydrate.AzmanL\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>So, what should you cook with tonight?<\/p>\n<p>Most days, consider swapping butter for olive oil in your frying pan. That will mean more heart-healthy fats get in your system.<\/p>\n<p>The best change you can make, though, is to <a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/how-to-grocery-shop-to-avoid-ultra-processed-food-cardiologist-2025-5?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:curb ultra-processed snacks;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">curb ultra-processed snacks<\/a>. Packaged cakes and cookies are often loaded with saturated fat from cooking oils.
