{"id":240876,"date":"2026-01-12T10:29:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-12T10:29:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/240876\/"},"modified":"2026-01-12T10:29:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T10:29:07","slug":"us-prosecutors-launch-criminal-investigation-into-federal-reserves-jerome-powell-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/240876\/","title":{"rendered":"US prosecutors launch criminal investigation into Federal Reserve\u2019s Jerome Powell \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">US prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/federal-reserve\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/federal-reserve\/\">Federal Reserve<\/a> chairman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jerome-powell\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jerome-powell\/\">Jerome Powell<\/a> over a $2.5 billion renovation of the US central bank\u2019s headquarters, sharply escalating the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Trump<\/a> administration\u2019s attacks on the Fed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Powell said on Sunday that the Fed on Friday received grand jury subpoenas and a threat of criminal indictment from the justice department relating to his testimony before Congress last summer about the renovation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a video statement, Mr Powell strongly rejected the \u201cunprecedented action\u201d from the department of justice, saying it was a pretext to rein in the Fed\u2019s independence to set <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/interest-rates\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/interest-rates\/\">interest rates<\/a> and part of a series of threats and pressure from the White House. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis new threat is not about my testimony last June or about the renovation of the Federal Reserve buildings,\u201d Mr Powell said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe threat of criminal charges is a consequence of the Federal Reserve setting interest rates based on our best assessment of what will serve the public, rather than following the preferences of the president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It comes as US President Donald Trump has repeatedly attacked Mr Powell, his own appointee to the role during his first term as president, calling him a \u201cstubborn mule\u201d for declining to cut borrowing costs more aggressively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Gold rose to a record high on Monday following the news of the department of justice investigation, gaining as much as 2 per cent to hit $4,600 a troy ounce before falling back to trade at about $4,576. Bullion tends to rally when Fed independence is perceived to be under threat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The dollar fell about 0.2 per cent against a basket of half a dozen peers. Futures tracking the blue-chip S&amp;P 500 share index declined about 0.6 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Trump denied any involvement in the department of justice probe. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI don\u2019t know anything about it, but he\u2019s certainly not very good at the Fed, and he\u2019s not very good at building buildings,\u201d the president told NBC News on Sunday evening, claiming the investigation had nothing to do with Mr Powell\u2019s refusal to slash rates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The probe will deepen investors\u2019 concerns about the independence of the world\u2019s most important central bank, a cornerstone of US economic policy that is widely viewed as vital for financial markets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Krishna Guha, vice-chairman at Evercore ISI and a former New York Fed official, called the move \u201ca deeply disturbing development\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Eswar Prasad, a professor at Cornell University, said: \u201cThe Trump administration is leaving no doubt about its determination to directly and heavy-handedly influence the Fed\u2019s policy actions through every avenue possible, including legal threats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Powell, whom Mr Trump has repeatedly said he would \u201clove\u201d to fire, said on Sunday he would not quit the Fed over the investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cPublic service sometimes requires standing firm in the face of threats,\u201d he said. \u201cI will continue to do the job the Senate confirmed me to do, with integrity and a commitment to serving the American people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Blake Gwinn, head of US rates strategy at RBC Capital Markets, said: \u201cMarkets will start to price in greater inflation expectations, inflation risk premium, and term premium if the Fed\u2019s independence comes under further attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe don\u2019t appear to have hit it yet, but every action is another step closer to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Grand juries determine whether prosecutors have presented enough evidence to indict an individual. During their investigations, prosecutors sometimes notify subjects before they seek an indictment in order to give them a chance to testify, justice department guidelines show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The subpoenas are thought to contain requests for information on Mr Powell\u2019s preparations for the testimony along with internal documents relating to the renovation of the headquarters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The administration has used the renovation project, which has run substantially over budget, as a line of attack against the US central bank and Mr Powell, whom Trump has labelled a \u201cnumbskull\u201d over his refusal to slash interest rates to 1 per cent. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Powell, who is set to step down as chairman in May, has previously rebutted claims from Russell Vought, a close Trump ally who heads the Office of Management and Budget, that he misled Congress over the renovation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Fed chairman said Mr Vought\u2019s accusations, that he had either lied to lawmakers or failed to inform planners, were incorrect as the changes were not substantial enough to warrant disclosure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Thom Tillis, a Republican member of the Senate banking committee who has been one of the few in Trump\u2019s party to diverge from the president, said on Sunday: \u201cIf there were any remaining doubt whether advisers within the Trump Administration are actively pushing to end the independence of the Federal Reserve, there should now be none.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Tillis said that he would oppose the confirmation of anyone Mr Trump nominated as Powell\u2019s replacement \u201cuntil this legal matter is fully resolved\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The US president is expected to announce his nominee in the coming weeks to replace Mr Powell. White House economist and Trump ally Kevin Hassett is seen as one of the front-runners for the role.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Trump has already attempted to fire Fed governor Lisa Cook over allegations of mortgage fraud, which are under investigation.
