Acclaimed BBC<\/a> drama The Night Manager<\/a> has aired a shocking twist that will drastically alter the show. and has left viewers collectively asking: \u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n

Tom Hiddleston<\/a> heads up the cast of the spy drama\u2019s long-awaited second season<\/a>, which originally aired in 2016, and the third episode has convinced fans that it\u2019s just as good as it ever was. This was helped by an unexpected cliffhanger conclusion that will make the wait for the next episode feel rather long.<\/p>\n

The closing moments of the episode featured the shock return of presumed-dead arms dealer Richard Roper, the villain played by Hugh Laurie<\/a> in the first series. <\/p>\n

In episode one, it\u2019s claimed that Roper was killed, with intelligence officer Angela Burr (Olivia Colman), confirming the identity of his corpse in a flashback scene set six years before the new series.<\/p>\n

However, in episode three, when Hiddleston\u2019s protagonist Jonathan Pine stealthily follows Roper\u2019s criminal son Teddy (Diego Calva) to a hidden location, he discovers that, rather than Teddy carrying out Roper\u2019s legacy alone, he is doing it alongside his father, who is alive and living with the name Gilberto Hanson. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe end of episode 3 of The Night Manager?!???!? WHAT THE F***?!??? HOW?!!????\u201d one fan asked, with another writing on X\/Twitter: \u201cOh my gosh, who has just watched episode three of series two? It was epic and utterly brilliant.\u201d<\/p>\n

Others called the ending \u201cmad\u201d and \u201cshocking\u201d, with an additional viewer stating: \u201cWhat a brilliant twisty ending to episode three. Big cheer from me. Roll on next week.\u201d<\/p>\n

Blast from the past: Hugh Laurie has returned to \u2018The Night Manager\u2019 (BBC)<\/p>\n

Ahead of season two, the show\u2019s creator David Farr claimed it was \u201creally tricky\u201d working with Laurie<\/a> on the first series, as the actor \u201creally wanted to play\u201d Hiddleston\u2019s lead character.<\/p>\n

Farr explained that House actor Laurie had previously tried to option John le Carr\u00e9\u2019s 1993 novel and envisioned himself as soldier-turned-spy Jonathan Pine. But, when Farr finally got the project off the ground, Hiddleston signed up for the leading role while Laurie was cast as Roper.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was suddenly doing the television show and had written the first episode, and everyone liked it and Tom Hiddleston had signed up [as Pine],\u201d Farr explained, as reported by MailOnline<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut then Hugh became really tricky, because he had such fixed ideas and none of his notes were about his character [Roper] \u2013 they were all about Tom\u2019s character \u2013 and I was like, \u2018Give me a break.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Farr continued: \u201cWe\u2019re fine now. I think if I\u2019d been more mature, I could have dealt with it better. Hugh is a lovely man, very passionate.
