Erin Doherty is sweeping up this awards season. Late last year there was a Primetime Emmy, earlier this month came a Critics Choice award, and, as of last night, she\u2019s a Golden Globe winner \u2013 all for her extraordinary portrayal of psychologist Briony Ariston in the show of 2025, Adolescence<\/a>.\u2028\u2028<\/p>\n

\u2018I’m never willing away the dream-like quality of this whole bizarre experience. It\u2019s not imposter syndrome, but more so, “What am I doing here?”,’ she tells ELLE in the midst of getting ready ahead of the Golden Globes ceremony. It\u2019s 10.45 am PT time and her glam for the evening is already underway. \u2018I love it because it feels like a gift, but also at the same time, it’s largely come from Adolescence. It was such a singular experience. For me personally, I was up there for three weeks (each episode was shot in three-week blocks), and we told the story as simply and as authentically as we could. My nominations \u2013 and now, wins \u2013 have come from it\u2019.<\/p>\n

Here, Doherty talks us through the evolution of her red-carpet dressing and what she loves most about the industry she’s conquering, one award at a time.<\/p>\n

\u2018Tonight, I\u2019m wearing Louis Vuitton and jewellery by David Yurman. The dress is structured, bold and I\u2019m leaning into the old Hollywood vibe, which feels fresh and new for me. When it comes to red carpet dressing, it’s all about feeling empowered and not feeling like the dress is wearing you, but rather, you’re wearing it, and completely owning it. There are times when I’m like, “I’m having a suit moment” but with this dress we tried it on and something just clicked and I thought, “This is it!”‘\u2028\u2028<\/p>\n

On her style evolution\u2026 <\/p>\n

\u2018Growing up as an actor, I’ve always tried to keep a firm grip on the playful nature of red-carpet dressing. I think that\u2019s also true in my day-to-day life. I try to think, how do I feel today? Sometimes it will be more androgynous or more feminine or purely masculine. I love to be surprised depending on my emotions. Working with my stylist Nell Kalonji, it feels like I\u2019m at school again. It\u2019s all freeing and playful. I love that sense of being a kid with it.’<\/p>\n

On working with team Adolescence… <\/p>\n

\u2018I’ve found my tribe with Hannah Walters and Stephen Graham and wherever they may roam, I will be not far behind them. They have brought that sense of calm to my life in so many ways \u2013 they’re everyone’s biggest cheerleader from the minute that you have them on your side. That has been the biggest revelation for me because regardless of whether they’re producing something, to have them in my life brings me this sense of peace. I know that we’ll work together for the rest of my life; I’ll always find my way back to them and that fills me with excitement. I’m really, overwhelmingly grateful that I get to call them friends as well as work colleagues.\u2019<\/p>\n

On starring in her new series A Thousand Blows…<\/p>\n

‘We shot the first two seasons of A Thousand Blows back-to-back, so it was an intense period, but one that I wouldn’t change. The character that I play, Mary Carr, is very different to Briony, but I’ve always grown up so fascinated by how different people can be and I’ve been determined to really submerge myself in everyone’s different psychology. \u2029It was a dream come true to be able to play such different human beings. When we got to the end of filming A Thousand Blows, Hannah and Stephen reached out and asked if I wanted to be a part of Adolescence. I think the fact that they had seen me solidly for a year as Mary Carr was the only nod that I needed to know that I had the ability to make that leap.’<\/p>\n

On her dream next creative pursuit… <\/p>\n

‘As an openly queer woman, I’m hugely passionate about exploring more queer stories, whether that means it’s me in front of the camera or behind the camera. It is something I just instinctively know will become a part of my life and I’m really excited to let that unfold, and exploring the complexities of what it means to tell our stories.’<\/p>\n

On her upcoming role in California Avenue…<\/p>\n

\u2028’I was hugely led by wanting to work with Helena Bonham Carter again. I had crossed paths with her on The Crown, but we didn’t have too many meaty moments together, so I thought this is was absolute no brainer. Bill Nighy, again, no brainer. Hugo Blick, the director and creator, it was an easy yes. California Avenue verges on a comedy, which is different for me, so it just felt like the right move. I love to push my limits and dive into things that scare me or things that I haven’t done before. That\u2019s the exciting part about this industry. I will never take that for granted.’<\/p>\n
