Oprah Winfrey is all in on having a partner. Not a \u201cgirlfriend.\u201d Not a \u201csignificant other.\u201d A partner.<\/p>\n

During her appearance on the Jan. 13 episode of TODAY with Jenna & Sheinelle, Oprah chimed in with her take on a recent GQ article<\/a> about men calling their girlfriends their \u201cpartner,\u201d a title that was amplified when Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet referred to Kylie Jenner as such <\/a>while accepting an award at the Critics Choice Awards. (He would do so again<\/a> when he won best male actor in a motion picture \u2014 musical or comedy during last weekend\u2019s Golden Globes<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know why I like the word \u2018partner\u2019? Because it\u2019s mature. It says that it\u2019s a mature, it\u2019s a stable relationship,\u201d Oprah said. \u201cIt\u2019s not just like \u2018my girlfriend.\u2019 \u2018Cause you have a girlfriend when you\u2019re 7, when you\u2019re 10, when you\u2019re 15. So \u2018partner\u2019 adds a level of maturity and responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, if a guy says, \u2018You know what? You\u2019re my partner,\u2019 that means \u2018I\u2019m riding with you.\u2019 Like, \u2018We\u2019re in this,\u2019\u201d Sheinelle Jones added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat means, yes, we\u2019re in it together. There\u2019s a partnership. … So I thought that was really good,\u201d Oprah replied.<\/p>\n

Oprah has referred to Stedman Graham<\/a> as her partner for years, putting her at the forefront of this word choice.<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore it was a thing, you were calling each other \u2018partner,\u2019\u201d Sheinelle pointed out. <\/p>\n

\u201cYes, we\u2019ve always used the word \u2018partner,\u2019\u201d Oprah said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course she started it. She started everything,\u201d Jenna Bush Hager joked. \u201cOprah started the word \u2018partner.\u2019 How dare we!\u201d<\/p>\n

Oprah said it\u2019s only natural to use partner, given the length of their relationship, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter 20 years, you can\u2019t say, \u2018He\u2019s my boyfriend.\u2019 … And, also, once you get to a certain age, \u2018He\u2019s my boyfriend\u2019 \u2014 No! \u2018Partner\u2019 is a much better word,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Oprah Winfrey is all in on having a partner.
