{"id":243431,"date":"2026-01-14T03:05:15","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T03:05:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/243431\/"},"modified":"2026-01-14T03:05:15","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T03:05:15","slug":"concerns-over-space-hygiene-and-council-tax-from-residents-in-stamford-grantham-bourne-and-the-deepings-as-south-kesteven-district-council-prepares-to-introduce-new-food-waste-recycling-scheme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/243431\/","title":{"rendered":"Concerns over space, hygiene and council tax from residents in Stamford, Grantham, Bourne and the Deepings as South Kesteven District Council prepares to introduce new food waste recycling scheme"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Plans to introduce a new food waste recycling service across South Kesteven have prompted a mixed response from residents, with many raising concerns about space, cost and potential hygiene issues.<\/p>\n<p>Households <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lincsonline.co.uk\/grantham\/news\/food-caddy-containers-set-to-be-delivered-ahead-of-new-waste-9448163\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">will receive two new caddy containers next month<\/a> ahead of the scheme\u2019s official start on Monday, April 13.<\/p>\n<p>A small five-litre indoor caddy will be supplied for daily use, alongside a larger 23-litre outdoor caddy for weekly collection.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 1275 992\" alt=\"New food waste caddy pictured next to a standard black household bin. Photo: SKDC<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lincsonline.co.uk\/news\/politics\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">South Kesteven District Council<\/a> says the scheme aims to cut the amount of waste sent to landfill and convert food scraps into fertiliser and biogas.<\/p>\n<p>Reactions from readers have ranged from cautious support to outright opposition.<\/p>\n<p>A majority of commenters expressed frustration at the practicalities of managing an extra bin, particularly in smaller kitchens, terraced homes and limited gardens.<\/p>\n<p>Alana Simpson, on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lincsonline.co.uk\/grantham\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Grantham Journal<\/a> Facebook page, wrote: \u201cI imagine the people who come up with these &#8216;bin for all occasions&#8217; decisions live in a house with a massive garden and can store them. They don&#8217;t think of 50% of the town.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jo Smithers, commenting on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lincsonline.co.uk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LincsOnline<\/a>, said: \u201cWe already have four bins indoors. Photo: SKDC<\/p>\n<p>Alongside storage, hygiene and vermin are major concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the council confirming collections will be weekly, replacing the current fortnightly disposal of food waste in the black bin, many residents fear the new caddies will create a nuisance.<\/p>\n<p>Lisa Wells commented on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lincsonline.co.uk\/stamford\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rutland &amp; Stamford Mercury\u2019s<\/a> post: \u201cWell that will smell delightful in the summer and the flies!\u201d while Neil Sawyer in Grantham joked: \u201cMaggot heaven in the summer lol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sheila Rimmington in Grantham added: \u201cI don&#8217;t want food left out for animals, eg mice and rats, encouraged to try and get it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some people questioned whether the service represents good value for council tax payers.<\/p>\n<p>Grantham reader Scott Burland wrote: \u201cJust another reason to put up council tax by 4.99 percent. Photo: SKDC<\/p>\n<p>Despite concerns, a minority welcomed the scheme for its environmental benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Janice Clough said: \u201cMost areas of the country collect food waste. It\u2019s nice to know that at last we\u2019re now going to have this collection. Most of the black bin waste is related to food. Anything that stops so much going to landfill is good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paul Mason, also on the Grantham page, said the anaerobic digestion facility generating natural forms of energy, such as biogas, would be \u201can excellent alternative to fossil fuels, and a fertiliser which can be used in local farming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs someone who has to keep my bin bags inside my house for two weeks this will be great,\u201d added Lucy Catherine in the Grantham discussion.<\/p>\n<p>Others pointed out the potential to reduce washing of black bins or to divert food scraps from landfill to energy production.<\/p>\n<p>Several residents also reflected on previous trials in the district, which they said were ineffective or caused inconvenience.<\/p>\n<p>Dawn Senior recalled an earlier scheme, saying: \u201cDid a trial of this years ago on Tennyson Avenue [Grantham]. Didn&#8217;t really work then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emma Woollard-Grose wrote in Stamford: \u201cI was part of the trial. They were awful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Councillor Rhys Baker (Ind), cabinet member for environment and waste, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lincsonline.co.uk\/grantham\/news\/food-caddy-containers-set-to-be-delivered-ahead-of-new-waste-9448163\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said previously that the new scheme would be \u201ca simple change with a powerful impact\u201d<\/a> and encouraged households to participate, stressing that food waste collection will follow the same schedule as existing bins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany residents are already enthusiastic recyclers and I am sure they will embrace this new system to see where it can take us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a simple change with a powerful impact. Together, we can reduce waste, generate clean energy and make Lincolnshire greener for generations to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The council advises residents to remove food from packaging and avoid liquids in the caddies.<\/p>\n<p>Items collected will be sent to a Lincolnshire anaerobic digestion facility to produce renewable electricity and nutrient-rich fertiliser.<\/p>\n<p>For further guidance and tips on reducing household food waste, residents can visit www.southkesteven.gov.uk\/foodwaste or the Love Food Hate Waste website.<\/p>\n<p>What do you think?
