Here\u2019s what Health Canada thinks will help"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">To give Canadians a boost in vitamin D, Health Canada is now requiring milk and margarine producers to more than double the amount in their products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">According to the federal health agency, one in five Canadians aren\u2019t getting enough of the so-called \u201csunshine\u201d vitamin. Experts say that\u2019s mainly because of a lack of sunlight, which our body uses to produce vitamin D.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe reality is we live in Canada,\u201d said Brenda Hartman, a nutritional sciences professor at Western University in London, Ont.\u00a0\u201cWe don\u2019t make vitamin D from the sun, you know, six to eight months of the year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Canada\u2019s high latitude results in shorter days and less intense sunshine during the winter months, because of the sun\u2019s low angle. According to Statistics Canada, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statcan.gc.ca\/o1\/en\/plus\/5095-shedding-light-canadas-vitamin-d-levels-we-approach-shortest-day-year\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:likelihood that people experience low vitamin D levels more than doubles in the winter;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">likelihood that people experience low vitamin D levels more than doubles in the winter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That\u2019s concerning for experts, who say vitamin D is essential \u2014 it\u2019s known to help the body absorb calcium, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/nutrients\/vitamin-d.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:strengthens bones and teeth;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">strengthens bones and teeth<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5990512\/#:~:text=Abstract,MS%20activity%20remains%20inadequately%20investigated.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Research;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Research<\/a> also suggests <a href=\"https:\/\/mscanada.ca\/vitamin-d-multiple-sclerosis\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:vitamin D deficiency is a risk factor for developing multiple sclerosis.;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">vitamin D deficiency is a risk factor for developing multiple sclerosis.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Other ways to get vitamin D include through diet and supplements, like pills or drops.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While Health Canada has required milk and other products to have vitamin D added in for decades, it has increased the amount to ensure more people are meeting the recommended daily dose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In 2022, under its food fortification strategy, Health Canada created a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/fortified-food\/canadas-approach.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:new regulation;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">new regulation<\/a> that allowed companies to voluntarily more than double the amount of vitamin D in cow\u2019s milk, goat\u2019s milk and nearly double it in margarine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As of Dec. 31, 2025, the regulation became mandatory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">For milk, this means it went from having roughly 2.3 micrograms to five micrograms of vitamin D per cup, whereas for <a href=\"https:\/\/laws-lois.justice.gc.ca\/eng\/regulations\/C.R.C.,_c._870\/section-B.09.016.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:margarine it\u2019s now about 13 micrograms per 50 grams;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">margarine it\u2019s now about 13 micrograms per 50 grams<\/a>, or about three tablespoons.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Vitamin D tablets are displayed in New York on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2016. (Mark Lennihan\/Associated Press)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cBy using mandatory fortification with very common foods, it becomes a more equitable approach to ensure that the whole population gets the benefit,\u201d said Mary L\u2019Abb\u00e9, director of the World Health Organization\u2019s Collaborating Centre on Nutrition Policy for Non-Communicable Disease Prevention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Yogurt, kefir and plant-based beverages are also allowed to include vitamin D, though they aren\u2019t required to have it. As more people switch over to non-dairy drinks, Health Canada said it was important to ensure vitamin D was also included in alternatives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">What\u2019s the recommended daily amount of vitamin D?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Depending on your age, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/drugs-health-products\/drug-products\/prescription-drug-list\/notices-changes\/notice-amendment-vitamin-d.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Health Canada recommends varying allowances;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Health Canada recommends varying allowances<\/a> per day. For babies, it\u2019s 10 micrograms, for older kids and adults, it&#8217;s 15 micrograms, and older adults should have 20 micrograms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">If a cup of milk now has five micrograms, that would mean having two to four cups of milk, depending on your age, to meet the recommended daily allowance, if it\u2019s your sole source of vitamin D.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe have to have at least four to five dairy products per day, which is not always possible,\u201d said Despoina Manousaki, a pediatric endocrinologist who studies bone health and an associate professor at the University of Montreal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">She said that would include drinking a couple of glasses of milk, having yogurt and some sort of cheese. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/nutrients\/vitamin-d.html#d2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Other food sources;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Other food sources<\/a> with naturally occurring vitamin D include egg yolks and fatty fish, according to Health Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe know that vitamin D supplementation is pretty effective, easy and cheap and helps maintain normal levels,\u201d Manousaki said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">People who take <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthlinkbc.ca\/healthlinkbc-files\/vitamin-d-and-your-health#:~:text=In%20Canada%2C%20vitamin%20D%20must,foods%20that%20contain%20vitamin%20D.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:certain types of medications or have certain medical conditions;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">certain types of medications or have certain medical conditions<\/a> might also need to take more vitamin D.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A typical vitamin D pill would give someone 25 micrograms \u2014 also expressed as 1,000 international units \u2014 of vitamin D.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Experts say if you're only relying on milk to get your vitamin D intake, you'd need to drink multiple cups daily to get enough. \" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/e053d3efdd26cec3319c806b85635894.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Nutritional experts say if you&#8217;re only relying on milk to get your vitamin D intake, you&#8217;d need to drink multiple cups a day to get enough. (CBC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While it is possible to take too much vitamin D, experts say it\u2019s very rare and would need to happen over a prolonged period of time to have significant health consequences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Some of those health effects could be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/vitamins-and-minerals\/vitamin-d\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:buildup of calcium that weakens the bones and leads to kidney or heart damage.\u00a0;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">buildup of calcium that weakens the bones and leads to kidney or heart damage.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The maximum amount varies depending on age, but Health Canada says the average adult shouldn\u2019t have more than 100 micrograms a day \u2014 that\u2019s equivalent to 4,000 international units, more than 20 glasses of milk or multiple vitamin D pills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe amount that you would actually \u2026 make from the sun, we\u2019re not going to get anywhere near that level where we\u2019re going to start seeing some of the side-effects or adverse effects associated with high intake,\u201d said Hartman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cYou only really see that with supplementation.
