Late-night hosts responded to the Trump administration\u2019s escalation of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)<\/a> action in Minneapolis and its criminal investigation into the Fed chair, Jerome Powell<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Jimmy Kimmel<\/p>\n

Jimmy Kimmel<\/a> opened Tuesday\u2019s monologue with a summary of \u201canother bananas speech\u201d by Donald Trump \u2013 this time at the Detroit Economic Club, where he tried to convince attenders that the protests in Minneapolis over the ICE shooting of Renee Good<\/a> were \u201cfake\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re not riots, they\u2019re real,\u201d Kimmel responded. \u201cFirst they want us to believe that we did not see what we all saw happen to Renee Good. Now he wants us to believe that the protests aren\u2019t real. It\u2019s like the emperor\u2019s new clothes in reverse \u2013 he\u2019s telling us we\u2019re the ones who are naked, while they do their best to cover everything up.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot only has the Trump administration iced local authorities out of the FBI investigation into the killing of Renee Good,\u201d he continued, but on Tuesday, six senior prosecutors quit after being pressured by the justice department to investigate Good\u2019s widow, who was in the car when she was shot. \u201cThey\u2019re investigating the victims instead of the perpetrator,\u201d the host lamented.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday morning, Trump posted an escalation on Truth Social: \u201cDo the people of Minnesota really want to live in a community in which there are thousands of already convicted murderers, drug dealers and addicts, rapists, violent released and escaped prisoners, dangerous people from foreign mental institutions and insane asylums, and other deadly criminals too dangerous to even mention.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat could be more dangerous than a murderer rapist escaped from an insane asylum?\u201d Kimmel wondered. \u201cBut fear not, great people of Minnesota, the day of reckoning and retribution is coming! Does anyone else miss the days when the president didn\u2019t sound like the undertaker at WrestleMania?<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean seriously, would someone get this hypoglycemic five-year-old a fidget spinner?\u201d he added. \u201cHe needs something to do with his hands.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stephen Colbert<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s one thing when the Trump administration comes after our rights, or comes after our ideals,\u201d said Stephen Colbert<\/a> on the Late Show. \u201cBut now he\u2019s coming after something we care about: our money.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd right now, make no mistake, our money is under attack,\u201d he continued, referring to the Trump administration\u2019s presumed prosecution of Jerome Powell, the chair of the Federal Reserve. \u201cThe Fed was established specifically to be an independent agency outside of political pressure,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s what keeps the entire global financial system from collapsing, and all of us going back to bartering with bales of indigo and little bags of toddler teeth.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo that could be bad,\u201d he quipped, citing a Politico report that even White House insiders are nervous about threats to the Fed chief\u2019s job spooking the bond market.<\/p>\n

The host then pivoted to the administration\u2019s deployment of 2,000 federal ICE agents in Minnesota in response to protests over ICE\u2019s killing of Renee Good as she drove home from dropping her child off at school. Trump has since announced plans to send 1,000 more ICE agents. \u201cSo he\u2019s clearly invading Minnesota,\u201d said Colbert. \u201cHas anyone told him that they don\u2019t have oil? Because the best he\u2019s going to get is 50m barrels of cream of mushroom soup.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019ve been on social media, you\u2019ve seen all the terrible activity these officers have been up to: pulling people from vehicles, raiding homes and schools and threatening and then delivering violence. But on the bright side, you may also have seen this,\u201d he said before a clip of an ICE officer running and then wiping out on an icy sidewalk.<\/p>\n

On a more serious note, \u201cit\u2019s not just a surge of goons,\u201d the host explained. \u201cIn order to justify the unjustifiable gunning down of an American citizen in her car, the Trump administration is trying to smear Renee Good\u2019s family.\u201d The justice department pressed for a criminal investigation into Good\u2019s widow, prompting six federal prosecutors in Minnesota to resign. \u201cGood for them. But this story is so awful that even their principled stand doesn\u2019t make me feel better,\u201d Colbert said \u2026 before playing the clip of the falling ICE agent again.<\/p>\n

Seth Meyers<\/p>\n

And on Late Night, Seth Meyers<\/a> checked in with Trump, who visited his dentist in Florida over the weekend. \u201cIt was just a standard checkup. He got a cleaning, a fluoride treatment, and another cognitive test,\u201d Meyers joked. \u201cA Florida dentist \u2013 or, as it\u2019s also known, a toothpick.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the White House tweeted a graphic of the health and human services secretary, Robert F Kennedy Jr, that said: \u201cWe are ending the war on protein.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFinally, finally, we can all say \u2018merry protein\u2019 again,\u201d Meyers joked.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you also ending the war in lightbulbs?\u201d he added, referring to Kennedy\u2019s over-shaded appearance in the graphic. \u201cSeriously, do we not have a brighter photo of this guy?\u201d<\/p>\n
