Each year, prescription costs continue to rise, and for some people this year, there may be sticker shock at the pharmacy counter.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs with everything else in healthcare, it seems. Prescription drug costs tend to be rising overall,\u201d said Connecticut Pharmacists Association CEO Nathan Tinker.<\/p>\n
NBC News reports a 4% increase in prescription costs this year, similar to the increase customers saw in 2025. It\u2019s also reporting that drug manufacturers have raised the price of more than 350 brand-name drugs.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe prescription benefit managers are the ones who really control and set that price, when you go to the counter,\u201d said Tinker.<\/p>\n
As insurance plans can change, some customers may also experience higher out-of-pocket caps and deductibles. Deductibles also reset at the beginning of the year, so people have to start over.<\/p>\n
Local pharmacies like Wolcott Pharmacy say they have seen customers surprised by the price of their medication. <\/p>\n
“People that saw no co-pays last January, this January they have co-pays, and they’re not happy about it,” said owner Mitul Patal.<\/p>\n
Yale New Haven Health\u00a0 VP and Chief Pharmacy Officer Marjorie Lazarre says technological advancements also play a role. With some new life-changing drugs, oftentimes only available as brand names.<\/p>\n
\u201cMany people know generics are cheaper,\u201d said Lazarre. \u201cSo with the advent of new medication, new technology, there\u2019s certainly an impact on cost.\u201d<\/p>\n
Experts recommend using programs like GoodRx and manufacturing coupons to get a lower cost at the register. <\/p>\n
