{"id":246831,"date":"2026-01-15T22:42:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T22:42:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/246831\/"},"modified":"2026-01-15T22:42:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T22:42:11","slug":"second-half-surge-gives-mtu-top-spot-in-group","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/246831\/","title":{"rendered":"Second-half surge gives MTU top spot in group"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">\n<p>                MTU Cork 2-20<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n<p>                Garda College 0-13<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">MTU Cork pushed on impressively in the second half to see off Garda College on Thursday night, topping Group B of the Electric Ireland Fitzgibbon Cup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">While the hosts\u2019 half-time advantage was 0-11 to 0-10 \u2013 having almost fallen four points behind coming up to the break \u2013 they asserted their supremacy after the restart. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Aaron McEvoy\u2019s 57th-minute goal, following good work from Darragh O\u2019Sullivan, Ronan Walsh, Diarmuid Healy and Alan Walsh, put them into a 1-12 to 0-11 advantage and they gained confidence from there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">When Walsh netted on the three-quarter mark, with hardworking midfielder Joe Egan the architect, the lead was 2-14 to 0-13 and doubts about the outcome dissipated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">However, a home victory was not always the formality that the bookmakers had decreed beforehand. Having won away to UCC as outsiders a week previously, this time the hosts found themselves as the unbackable favourites in the sights of visitors who could certainly play.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Watergrasshill\u2019s D\u00e1ire O\u2019Leary, who is set to be included in Cork\u2019s panel for the Allianz Hurling League, played centre-back for the boys in blue and curbed Healy for much of the first half \u2013 he even outscored his former Imokilly team-mate two to one in the opening period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">With Cian Boyle a lively outlet in attack, the visitors led on occasion in the early stages and didn\u2019t trail by more than a point in that first half. In the 27th minute, when they led by 0-9 to 0-8, they might have even had a goal \u2013 great work for Ciar\u00e1n Kirwan led to a chance for Daniel but, while the ball went past goalkeeper Grantis Bucinskas, Tadhg O\u2019Leary Hayes took it off the line.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/4934009_6_articleinlinemobile_EOHGarda04.jpg\" alt=\"MTU Cork's Ryan Deasy gathers the sliothar ahead of Garda College's Shane Fitzgibbon. Picture: Eddie O&#8217;Hare<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">While Boyle put the resultant 65 over to make it 0-10 to 0-8, MTU finished the half well.
