On the screen, he saw an Amur tiger walk into frame with several cubs following close behind.<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"1\">Chapman, the initiative lead for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/about\/profiles\/stuart-chapman\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WWF International\u2019s tiger program<\/a>, has worked in tiger and wildlife conservation for more than 30 years. The video promised something Chapman had never seen before.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768522508_599_scale;webp=auto;jpeg_quality=60.jpg\"  width=\"786\" height=\"440\" style=\"display:block;height:auto;aspect-ratio:786 \/ 440\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>NCTLNP<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"0\">\u201cI literally sat there holding my breath, counting one, two, three, four,\u201d Chapman told The Dodo. \u201cI was like, \u2018Well, have I miscounted?\u2019 And then when the fifth one comes out &#8230; I was just stunned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768522508_675_scale;webp=auto;jpeg_quality=60.jpg\"  width=\"792\" height=\"580\" style=\"display:block;height:auto;aspect-ratio:792 \/ 580\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>NCTLNP<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"0\">Five Amur tiger cubs and their mother moseyed along a trail in Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park (NCTLNP). Four of the cubs follow closely behind Mama, while the fifth dillydallies before lumbering into frame.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768522509_113_hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"click to play video\" class=\"embed-video--youtube-thumb\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>NCTLNP<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"0\">The footage, captured in November 2025 in northeast China near the Russian border, features the largest number of Amur tigers ever seen together at once \u2014 and not just on film.<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"1\">\u201cWe couldn&#8217;t find anyone with any field observations having seen that many,\u201d Chapman said. \u201cWe did some digging around and none of the field biologists could recall having ever heard of an Amur tiger with five cubs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768522510_19_scale;webp=auto;jpeg_quality=60.jpg\"  width=\"792\" height=\"441\" style=\"display:block;height:auto;aspect-ratio:792 \/ 441\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>NCTLNP<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"0\">Amur tigers, also known as Siberian tigers, depending on where they live, typically give birth to one to four cubs. Chapman was shocked by the fifth in the video, and by how big and healthy each cub looked.<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"1\">Their size indicated that Mama has fed herself and five growing babies with local food sources, and that these 6- to 8-month-old cubs have survived past the first 90 days, notoriously the most precarious time for new tiger cubs.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768522510_491_scale;webp=auto;jpeg_quality=60.jpg\"  width=\"792\" height=\"634\" style=\"display:block;height:auto;aspect-ratio:792 \/ 634\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>Andrew Porter\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"0\">Watching the clip was essentially witnessing conservation in action.<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"1\">Back in the 1990s, when Chapman began his conservation career, there were maybe 15 individual tigers in that part of the world.<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"2\">About 20 years ago, 13 countries with tiger populations dedicated more resources to rebuilding the low numbers. Today, an estimated 70 tigers live in that area, Chapman wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/stuart-chapman-6425b8157_wwfchina-tigersalive-activity-7412832761637474304-kHbf?utm_source=social_share_send&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop_web&amp;rcm=ACoAAAOIxyoBL57nSEQkJSQQNKqzOk7eJH5tyOc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LinkedIn post<\/a> about the video.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768522510_477_scale;webp=auto;jpeg_quality=60.jpg\"  width=\"792\" height=\"528\" style=\"display:block;height:auto;aspect-ratio:792 \/ 528\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>Westend61\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"0\">The trail camera that captured the six Amur tigers is a small part of those efforts.<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"1\">\u201cThese cameras also act as security cameras,\u201d he said.
