Nearly a year after their deaths, Gene Hackman<\/a> and Betsy Arakawa<\/a>‘s New Mexico estate<\/a> is hitting the market.<\/p>\n

The 13,000-square-foot stucco property, located in Santa Fe, has been listed at $6.25 million, Tara S. Earley and Ricky Allen of Sotheby’s International Realty confirmed to The Wall Street Journal<\/a> in an interview published Thursday, Jan. 15. The luxury real estate brand is overseeing the home’s sale.<\/p>\n

Hackman, the intense character actor who won two Oscars in a more than 60-year career, died alongside his wife,\u00a0Arakawa, in February<\/a> after the couple’s bodies were discovered by police at their home on Feb. 26.<\/p>\n

The mysterious circumstances surrounding Hackman and Arakawa’s deaths led to a sweeping investigation, which included the\u00a0release of police bodycam footage<\/a>\u00a0detailing the conditions of the pair’s residence and\u00a0Arakawa’s online activity<\/a>\u00a0in the weeks leading up to their deaths.<\/p>\n

“There will be some buyers that are just averse to purchasing a property where a death has occurred,” Earley told The Wall Street Journal. “There are other buyers for whom that doesn’t matter. We are selling the property on its virtues and all of the positives.”<\/p>\n

Earley and Allen added that all of the couple’s personal effects have been removed from the home, and the residence has been “professionally staged” for prospective buyers.<\/p>\n

Nestled in the bone-dry hills of Santa Fe, Hackman and Arakawa’s green two-story house<\/a> provided\u00a0the acclaimed actor a respite from the chaos of Hollywood during his final years.<\/p>\n

The property was a labor of love for the couple, who rebuilt it from the studs using a blend of pueblo, colonial and Spanish baroque style, according to Architectural Digest<\/a>.<\/p>\n

One of the home’s centerpieces is a wide living space equipped with a modern stereo system and large stately columns. “I wanted a big room with a great-hall feeling, with other rooms opening off it, not closed off with a lot of walls,”\u00a0Hackman\u00a0told AD in 1990. “It’s totally different from my other houses.”<\/p>\n

Hackman, who was also a visual artist,\u00a0was intimately involved with the design of the home, the magazine noted, even mixing colors on his own painter’s palette occasionally to show the shades he wanted for the house. He lived in Santa Fe for four decades, much of that time in the remodeled property.<\/p>\n

Following their deaths, Hackman and Arakawa were discovered in separate rooms by authorities, Arakawa in a bathroom off the main entrance and Hackman in a mudroom.<\/p>\n

New Mexico’s chief medical examiner, Dr. Heather Jarrell, said the office’s investigation found that Hackman, 95, died of natural causes. The actor also had heart disease and complications caused by Alzheimer’s disease. Meanwhile, Arakawa, 65, died from\u00a0hantavirus pulmonary syndrome<\/a>, a rare disease that is contracted by contact with mouse droppings.<\/p>\n
