Protesters in Denmark<\/a> and Greenland<\/a> demonstrated \u200don Saturday against US president Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s demand that the Arctic island be ceded to the US. The demonstrators called on the US to respect Greenlanders\u2019 right to self-determination. <\/p>\n

Mr Trump Greenland is vital to US security<\/a> because of its strategic location and large mineral deposits. He has not ruled out using force to take it. European nations this week sent military personnel to the island at Denmark\u2019s \u200crequest.<\/p>\n

In Copenhagen, demonstrators chanted \u201cGreenland is not for sale\u201d and held up slogans such as \u201cNo means No\u201d \u2060and \u201cHands off Greenland\u201d alongside the territory\u2019s red-and-white flag as they marched to the US embassy.<\/p>\n

Some wore red \u200cbaseball \u200bcaps \u200dresembling the \u201cMake America Great Again\u201d caps of Trump supporters, but with the slogan \u201cMake America Go Away\u201d.<\/p>\n

In Greenland\u2019s capital Nuuk, hundreds of protesters led by prime minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen carried flags and similar banners as they headed for the US consulate.<\/p>\n

They passed a newly \u2060built block where Washington plans to move its consulate \u2013 currently a red wooden building with four staff.<\/p>\n

Organisers estimated over \u206020,000 people attended the protest in Copenhagen – akin \u2060to the entire population of Nuuk \u2013 though police did not provide an official figure. Other protests were held across Denmark.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am very grateful for the huge support we as \u200dGreenlanders receive … we are also sending a message to the world that you all must wake up,\u201d said Julie Rademacher, chair of Uagut, an organisation for Greenlanders in Denmark.<\/p>\n

Mr Trump\u2019s repeated statements about the island have triggered a diplomatic crisis between the US and Denmark, both founding members of the NATO military alliance, and have been widely condemned in Europe. The territory of 57,000 people, governed for centuries from Copenhagen, has carved out significant autonomy since 1979 but remains part of \u200cDenmark, which controls defence \u200cand foreign policy, and funds much of the administration.<\/p>\n

About 17,000 Greenlanders live in Denmark, according to Danish authorities.<\/p>\n

All five parties elected to Greenland\u2019s parliament ultimately favour independence, but they disagree on the \u200ctiming and have recently said they would rather remain part of Denmark than join the US.<\/p>\n

Only 17 per cent of Americans approve of Mr \u2060Trump\u2019s efforts to acquire Greenland. Large majorities of Democrats and Republicans oppose using military force to annex it, a Reuters\/Ipsos poll found.
