in tourist accommodation reaching an estimated 3.08 billion, according to early figures published today by <a href="https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/products-eurostat-news/w/ddn-20260116-1" year.

The increase was driven primarily by international travel, with nights spent by overseas visitors rising by 46.1 million during the year.

By contrast, nights spent by domestic tourists grew at a slower pace, increasing by 15.4 million.

Overall, tourism demand across the EU remained broadly balanced between international and domestic markets.

International guests accounted for 49% of all nights spent in tourist accommodation in 2025, while domestic guests made up the remaining 51%.

Hotels and similar accommodation continued to dominate the market, accounting for the majority of overnight stays.

Eurostat estimates show that hotels recorded 1.9 billion nights during the year, representing 63% of the total.

Holiday dwellings and other short-stay accommodation accounted for 743 million nights, or 24%, while campsites recorded 413 million nights, representing 13% of overall stays.

The data forms part of Eurostat’s early estimates on tourism and is drawn from a more detailed analysis published in its Statistics Explained article on nights spent at tourist accommodation establishments.

Tourism growth was widespread across the EU in 2025, with nearly all member states recording an increase in the number of nights spent compared with the previous year.

Malta saw the strongest growth, with an increase of 10%, followed by Poland at 7% and Latvia at 6%.

However, a small number of countries bucked the broader EU trend.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="600" million compared with 2024, representing growth of 2% year on year.

Romania recorded a slight decline of 1% in tourism nights in 2025, while Ireland experienced a 2% decrease compared with 2024, according to the Eurostat estimates.

Despite these exceptions, the overall picture points to continued growth in EU tourism activity in 2025, supported largely by increased international travel and sustained demand across hotels, short-stay accommodation and campsites.

Tourism activity across the European Union increased
