The bloodwork you get done at your annual physical, maybe. Your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gq.com\/story\/everyone-hates-bmi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">body mass index<\/a>. Perhaps how much you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gq.com\/story\/bench-press-demystified\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bench press<\/a>. But there\u2019s another number that\u2019s increasingly in the mix: VO2 max.<\/p>\n<p>Plainly stated, VO2 max is the maximum rate of oxygen consumption attainable during physical exertion. Think of this number as a simple indicator of how well your lungs work, how efficiently your heart pushes blood to your muscles, and how effectively those muscles can extract and use the oxygen in that blood. The name\u2019s derived from three abbreviations: &#8220;V\u0307&#8221; for volume, &#8220;O\u2082&#8221; for oxygen, and &#8220;max&#8221; for maximum.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been a favorite metric of endurance sports athletes for decades, but it\u2019s increasingly endorsed by longevity experts like <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/peterattiamd.com\/category\/exercise\/vo2-max\/\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/peterattiamd.com\/category\/exercise\/vo2-max\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/peterattiamd.com\/category\/exercise\/vo2-max\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Attia<\/a> as a measure of overall health. But do you really need another thing to gauge what\u2019s happening with your body? The experts say yes.<\/p>\n<p>How It\u2019s Measured<\/p>\n<p>VO2 max is expressed as milliliters of oxygen consumed in a minute per kilogram of body weight. A higher VO2 max number typically means you\u2019re in good shape. Like most measurements of fitness, a good number varies based on age\u2014VO2 max generally declines roughly 2% per year after age 30.<\/p>\n<p>While many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gq.com\/gallery\/best-fitness-trackers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wearable fitness trackers<\/a> will estimate your VO2 max, the only way to accurately measure the exact number is by undergoing testing in a lab. This typically involves wearing a mask over your face to record your oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production while either riding a bike or running on a treadmill. Tests are widely available for civilians and generally run a couple hundred bucks.<\/p>\n<p>Why It&#8217;s So Important<\/p>\n<p>At the very foundation, a higher VO2 max means you\u2019re more capable of doing everyday things. \u201cThink about someone&#8217;s day-to-day effort,\u201d says <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/dtraining\/\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/dtraining\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/dtraining\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Danny King<\/a>, director of performance and recovery for dynamic personal training at <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.lifetime.life\/\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.lifetime.life\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lifetime.life\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Life Time<\/a> health clubs. \u201cIf I ask them to go walk up two sets of stairs and they&#8217;ve got a really low VO2 max, they may hit 85 to 90% of theirs because they have a relatively low total ability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In other words, if you can improve your top-end ability, climbing a couple sets of stairs or chasing your kids at the playground uses less of your body\u2019s total aerobic capacity and becomes that much easier.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also a massive correlation between VO2 max and <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/article.imrpress.com\/journal\/FBL\/23\/8\/10.2741\/4657\/Landmark4657.pdf\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/article.imrpress.com\/journal\/FBL\/23\/8\/10.2741\/4657\/Landmark4657.pdf&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/article.imrpress.com\/journal\/FBL\/23\/8\/10.2741\/4657\/Landmark4657.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">all-cause mortality<\/a>, with <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/2047487316655466?journalCode=cprc#xd_co_f=MmE1NzhjZTYtODI2OC00NWUyLTlkYTctYzdkOTAyNzcwZTU4~\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one study<\/a> even showing that an increase in VO2 max levels was linked to a 21% lower risk of death over 45 years of follow-up, even after adjusting for other risk factors like blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and smoking.<\/p>\n<p>How to Increase Your VO2 Max<\/p>\n<p>In accordance with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/physicalactivity\/basics\/adults\/index.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CDC recommendations<\/a>, King recommends a minimum of 120 minutes of cardiovascular exercise a week. Additionally, he suggests mixing easier and harder workouts: \u201cA majority of your efforts should be lower intensity,\u201d he says. \u201cThen, add in one or two harder, more intense efforts per week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While VO2 max is a relatively new point of emphasis for overall health and longevity, it\u2019s a foundational principle of training for endurance sports. Because of that, just about any training plan to increase your running pace, cycling power, or performance in any other cardio sport will have the knock-on effect of increasing your VO2 max.
