{"id":250860,"date":"2026-01-18T08:35:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-18T08:35:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/250860\/"},"modified":"2026-01-18T08:35:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-18T08:35:08","slug":"irish-citizen-detained-in-russia-since-august-after-anti-russian-messages-found-on-phone-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/250860\/","title":{"rendered":"Irish citizen detained in Russia since August after \u2018anti-Russian\u2019 messages found on phone \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">An Irish citizen has been detained by Russian authorities since August due to messages on his phone which expressed anti-Russian sentiment, his wife has said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Daria Petrenko (37), a Ukrainian woman living in Co Galway, has appealed to Irish authorities to intervene in her husband\u2019s case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Dmitry Simbaev (49), a dual Russian-Irish citizen, lived and worked in Ireland for  more than 20 years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Petrenko said her husband has been charged with various offences under Part 2 of the Criminal Code of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\/\">Russian Federation<\/a>. The specific articles &#8211; 205, 280 and 330 \u2013 refer to \u201cpublic justification of terrorism\u201d, \u201cpublic calls for extremist activity\u201d and \u201carbitrary action committed with the use of violence or the threat of its use\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">If found guilty, he could be jailed for several years or sent to a forced labour camp.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/01\/10\/the-most-ukrainian-town-in-ireland\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The most Ukrainian town in Ireland: \u2018We had to get used to each other\u2019s culture\u2019Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Petrenko believes the charges are frivolous. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-foreign-affairs\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-foreign-affairs\/\">Department of Foreign Affairs<\/a> is \u201caware of the case and is providing consular assistance\u201d, but cannot comment on individual cases, a spokesman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is understood Mr Simbaev\u2019s dual citizenship has made  intervention by Ireland more difficult. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Petrenko believes Russian authorities think her husband\u2019s Russian citizenship supersedes his Irish one and, as such, may not co-operate with Irish officials.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Daria Petrenko, wife of Dimitry Simbaev, said her husband has been denied calls to her and his parents, and that she last spoke to him on the phone in August. She does not know why police targeted him on his most recent trip.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Petrenko moved to Ireland after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ukraine-crisis\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ukraine-crisis\/\">Russian invasion of Ukraine<\/a> in 2022. The couple met here and married in January 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">When Mr Simbaev went to Russia in August 2025, he was detained by police at Chelyabinsk Airport. Chelyabinsk is located in west-central Russia, close to the Ural Mountains. Mr Simbaev was travelling on his Russian passport at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Petrenko said police searched her husband\u2019s luggage and took his mobile phone. She said police told Mr Simbaev they were detaining him because of \u201canti-Russian\u201d content on his phone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She believes this content relates to messages she sent him in 2024 in which she expressed anger at Russian authorities over the invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Petrenko said her mother died  of a heart attack which she believes was caused by the stress of the war. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThey started bombing my city, Kharkiv&#8230; I lost my mother, my mother died. I wrote my opinion [in the messages] because of a difficult situation in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/social-affairs\/2025\/11\/19\/more-than-83000-ukrainians-who-fled-war-remain-in-ireland-cso-finds\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">More than 83,000 Ukrainians who fled war remain in Ireland, CSO findsOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Petrenko has signed an affidavit, seen by The Irish Times, in which she confirmed she wrote the messages in question.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI suffered the loss of my mother and other close family members and loved ones,\u201d the affidavit said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cDuring this period, I made certain communications via electronic messaging services &#8230; which &#8230; reflected my emotional distress at that time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI acknowledge that the manner and tone of those communications was inappropriate, and I regret any offence, concern, or distress that may have been caused to any person as a result.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, there has been a notable increase in prosecutions in Russia for online comments deemed anti-Russian or anti-government, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/amnesty-international\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/amnesty-international\/\">Amnesty International<\/a> has said, with many cases resulting in lengthy prison sentences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Petrenko said her husband has been denied calls to her and his parents. She last spoke to him on the phone in August. Only the lawyer has contact with my husband, maybe once a week.
