The drugs\u2019 rise has coincided with a broader wellness and health-focused shift that seems to emphasize protein, forcing restaurants built on abundance and bottomless refills to rethink how much food consumers actually want.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-ab7f2d\" class=\"body-graf\">Smoothie King is among the restaurants that capitalized on this movement as early as 2024, introducing a GLP-1 menu featuring smoothies with high protein and fiber content, and with zero grams of added sugar<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20260107057028\/en\/Smoothie-King-Introduces-100g-Protein-Pack-and-Free-GLP-1-Offer-Following-Insights-from-First-Healthy-Habits-and-Smoothie-Trends-Report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">.<\/a> Now, some of the biggest names in American dining appear to have followed suit.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f92fab\" class=\"body-graf\">Olive Garden announced in December that it was adding a \u201clighter portion\u201d section to its menu, offering seven dishes with smaller portions at lower prices. Chipotle now offers a high-protein menu, including a serving of cubed chicken with 32 grams of protein for around the price of a latte. At Shake Shack, customers can enjoy lettuce-wrapped versions of the chain\u2019s famed smash burgers on the &#8220;Good Fit Menu.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-e93913\" class=\"body-graf\">This month, Subway added &#8220;Protein Pockets,&#8221; small snack wraps with more than 20 grams of protein.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4fee8b\" class=\"body-graf\">For those taking GLP-1s, eating higher-protein foods goes hand in hand with eating smaller portions. The medications severely curb users\u2019 appetites, so when they do eat, they need nutrient-rich foods to ensure they are still eating a balanced meal. Protein also keeps you fuller for longer, so eating foods packed with protein helps with weight loss, as you do not have to eat as frequently or as much.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9bc483\" class=\"body-graf\">But even if only some of these restaurants explicitly state that these medications \u2014 and their customers\u2019 changing appetites \u2014 are the driving force behind the new menu items, experts say the connection is clear.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c2da4e\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cPeople on GLP-1s are prioritizing protein because it\u2019s the macronutrient that they need to preserve muscle mass,\u201d said Jenna Werner, a registered dietitian. She added that restaurants are \u201cutilizing this weight loss cultural movement to hop on that train.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Restaurants cater to rising GLP-1 use<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-59bbc1\" class=\"body-graf\">In the last two years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/glp-1-supplements-weight-loss-science-what-know-rcna201921\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">GLP-1s for weight loss have become both popular<\/a> and easier to access, Werner said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-85e7df\" class=\"body-graf\">The drugs skyrocketed in mainstream popularity after the Food and Drug Administration began approving GLP-1 medications for weight loss over the last five years, in addition to their pre-existing approvals to treat diabetes. As the drugs became more available, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/celebrities-on-ozempic-rcna129740\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">growing number<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/oprah-winfrey-weight-loss-drug-rcna128714\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">actors, influencers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/womens-health\/serena-williams-glp-1-weight-loss-rcna226141\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">athletes<\/a> began crediting the drugs with their drastic weight loss.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-bae25e\" class=\"body-graf\">According to a November <a href=\"https:\/\/files.kff.org\/attachment\/topline-kff-health-tracking-poll-nov-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">poll from the Kaiser Family Foundation<\/a>, 12% of Americans reported taking a GLP-1 drug, which doubled from the previous May.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-490159\" class=\"body-graf\">Novo Nordisk, the maker of Wegovy and Ozempic, declined a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-8f87d4\" class=\"body-graf\">A spokesperson for Eli Lilly, the maker of Mounjaro and Zepbound, said the company values \u201cefforts to make healthy living easier for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-95e5f4\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWhen restaurants offer more menu options and flexible portion sizes they help empower diners, including those managing complex conditions like obesity and diabetes, to make healthier decisions and reduce food waste,\u201d the Lilly spokesperson said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f53412\" class=\"body-graf\">The protein obsession is not all due to the rise in GLP-1 use. Last week, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/us-dietary-guidelines-protein-dairy-fat-rfk-jr-rcna252656\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Trump administration<\/a> released updated U.S. dietary guidelines recommending that Americans consume 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily, up from the previous recommendation of 0.8 grams per kilogram.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0e5a15\" class=\"body-graf\">Werner, who called the increased recommendation \u201csignificant,\u201d noted that a healthy, protein-focused diet is essential for GLP-1 users. She added that restaurants also \u201cknow people not on GLP-1s need to eat more protein, so it just kind of all fits together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-642893\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cI do think that people are seeing it as an opportunity to push [protein] more because it makes sense for more people,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-67351e\" class=\"body-graf\">Some restaurant executives agree.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c79dbf\" class=\"body-graf\">Damien Harmon, Subway\u2019s president for North America, told NBC News the chain\u2019s Protein Pockets were driven by a demand for higher protein and fewer calories. He agreed that the use of GLP-1 drugs in the U.S. was a key driver behind the new menu wraps.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b00d92\" class=\"body-graf\">The Protein Pockets are now available in 96% of U.S. stores, in addition to Subway\u2019s long-standing Fresh Fit menu, which was first introduced in the early 2010s and was recently reintroduced due to high demand.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b10c7e\" class=\"body-graf\">Ricardo Cardenas, CEO of Darden Restaurants Inc., which owns Olive Garden, said in a December earnings call that the inclusion of smaller portions \u201cis designed to give guests more choices\u201d alongside Olive Garden\u2019s regular supersized portions. For example, a chicken parmigiana from Olive Garden contains 1,020 calories and 64 grams of protein, according to the restaurant\u2019s menu nutrition breakdown. Its lighter-portion counterpart has 630 calories and 36 grams of protein.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4251fd\" class=\"body-graf\">The new menu \u201cjust so happens to benefit the consumers that might want smaller portions that are on GLP-1 medications,\u201d Cardenas said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-af6b17\" class=\"body-graf\">Chris Brandt, Chipotle\u2019s president and chief brand officer, told NBC News that the brand\u2019s \u201cHigh Protein Cup\u201d \u2014 which appears on the restaurant\u2019s \u201cHigh Protein Menu\u201d \u2014 came in response to a \u201cgrowing demand for protein-forward options across more occasions, especially snack-sized portions at accessible prices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0bf8ac\" class=\"body-graf\">He also pointed to a social media trend in which customers were \u201chacking\u201d their meals by ordering a side of protein as a stand-alone snack. The \u201cHigh Protein Cup\u201d formalizes that behavior, Brandt said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-5e1ecb\" class=\"body-graf\">While Brandt didn\u2019t specifically cite GLP-1s, he noted \u201ca clear shift toward diets rich in protein and fiber, and for some guests, smaller portions throughout the day\u201d \u2014 all habits consistent with the medication\u2019s use.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-8b2730\" class=\"body-graf\">Shake Shack\u2019s \u201cGood Fit Menu\u201d was born because \u201cmany of our guests are increasingly looking for more flexibility in how they enjoy their favorite restaurants,\u201d said Luke DeRouen, the chain\u2019s chief communications officer.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-34f878\" class=\"body-graf\">Smoothie King, however, has not shied away from the core reasoning behind its GLP-1-friendly menu.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-5956c4\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cAs GLP-1 usage has become more common, Smoothie King also saw a growing population trying to navigate appetite changes while still getting enough nutrients,\u201d the company said in a January news release<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20260107057028\/en\/Smoothie-King-Introduces-100g-Protein-Pack-and-Free-GLP-1-Offer-Following-Insights-from-First-Healthy-Habits-and-Smoothie-Trends-Report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">.<\/a> \u201cIn response, the brand developed a GLP-1 Support Menu \u2014 created with a registered dietitian \u2014 designed to make it easier for guests to stay nourished with options that are high in protein and fiber and contain zero grams of added sugar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-cf71f6\" class=\"body-graf\">Werner said these changes make sense but cautioned against the belief that simply adding more protein is healthier.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-993acb\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cNot everybody needs 50 grams of protein in one sitting,\u201d Werner said. \u201cIf we\u2019re only eating protein, where are our carbohydrates? Where are our fats?
