{"id":253235,"date":"2026-01-19T22:56:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-19T22:56:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/253235\/"},"modified":"2026-01-19T22:56:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-19T22:56:09","slug":"cork-gets-to-see-spectacular-aurora-borealis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/253235\/","title":{"rendered":"Cork gets to see spectacular aurora borealis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Residents in East Cork and beyond were looking to the skies this evening and were treated to the rare sight of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/opinion\/commentanalysis\/arid-41742069.html\">the northern lights<\/a> which filled the sky with a beautiful green and red aura.<\/p>\n<p>The northern lights, or aurora borealis, are the results of &#8220;collisions between gas particles in our atmosphere and charged particles ejected from the Sun\u2019s atmosphere&#8221;, according to Met \u00c9ireann.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/4938599_1_articleinline_IMG_1663_1_.jpg\" alt=\"The northern lights viewed from Glanmire in East Cork. Picture: Michael Crowley<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Not often seen in Ireland, the phenomenon creates a stunning array of colours in the night sky. Met \u00c9ireann said:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n            The colour of the northern lights will change due to the type of gas particles that are colliding.\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;Oxygen molecules at approximately 100km above the earth produce a greenish-yellow colour, while a red aurora can be seen when high level oxygen molecules are involved.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;Blue or purple auroras indicate the presence of nitrogen molecules.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/4938581_13_articleinline_Cobh_aurora_Jan19_2026.jpg\" alt=\"The aurora borealis or northern lights photographed by a resident in Glanmire, East Cork, on Monday.
