Himalayan vulture rescued from ECP dies from kidney & gastrointestinal problems: ACRES<\/p>\n

A male Himalayan vulture has died about four days after he was rescued in a \u201cdistressed\u201d state from the East Coast Parkway (ECP).<\/p>\n

The bird had suffered from stress and exhaustion, which worsened its pre-existing conditions,\u00a0the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES) told MS News.<\/p>\n

Vulture rescued after being found \u2018struggling\u2019 along the ECP<\/p>\n

The large raptor was spotted along the ECP on 11 Jan<\/a>, with multiple people snapping photos of the rare sighting.<\/p>\n

A driver said on TikTok that the vulture \u201cnosedived\u201d and landed in front of her car<\/a> along the ECP, resulting in her having to hit the brakes to avoid running over him.<\/p>\n

ACRES subsequently rescued him after reports that he was \u201cstruggling\u201d along the expressway and had also been stranded in a canal.<\/p>\n

ACRES hoped to release bird after treatment<\/p>\n

ACRES Chief Executive Officer Kalai Vanan Balakrishnan said since the vulture was rescued, his vet team had been \u201chard at work\u201d attending to him.<\/p>\n

They had hoped to fully rehabilitate the bird and release him, he previously told MS News.<\/p>\n

While he was being attended to indoors, they also prepared an outdoor cage for him as \u201cit can be stressful for such a large bird to be confined indoors\u201d, Mr Kalai added.<\/p>\n

Vulture\u2019s condition deteriorated quickly on 15 Jan<\/p>\n

The vulture at first seemed to show \u201cglimpses of progress\u201d during his treatment.<\/p>\n

However, his condition took \u201ca sudden turn\u201d for the worse on Thursday (15 Jan), Mr Kalai said.<\/p>\n

The vet team responded immediately with emergency care, even as he deteriorated quickly over 12 hours.<\/p>\n

Sadly, he passed away close to midnight while the vet team was trying to stabilise him.<\/p>\n

Vulture dies from \u2018acute intoxication\u2019<\/p>\n

ACRES conducted a post-mortem, and found that the vulture had died from \u201cacute intoxication\u201d.<\/p>\n

This had been caused by his pre-existing kidney and gastrointestinal problems, Mr Kalai said, adding:<\/p>\n

Stress and exhaustion exacerbated these conditions.<\/p>\n

2nd Himalayan vulture to die in S\u2019pore this month<\/p>\n

This is the second reported Himalayan vulture to die in Singapore this month, following one that was rescued by the National Parks Board (NParks) in Kranji on 3 Jan.<\/p>\n

That vulture was sent to Mandai Wildlife Group (MWG) for treatment after being found in poor health<\/a>, MWG\u00a0told The Straits Times (ST).<\/p>\n

It was put in intensive care as it suffered from anaemia, muscle injuries and its kidneys were not working properly.<\/p>\n

The bird\u2019s condition deteriorated five days after rescue, prompting MWG and NParks to euthanise it on 7 Jan.<\/p>\n
