{"id":257068,"date":"2026-01-22T00:57:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-22T00:57:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/257068\/"},"modified":"2026-01-22T00:57:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-22T00:57:09","slug":"mps-vote-to-delete-troubles-legislation-immunity-clause","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/257068\/","title":{"rendered":"MPs vote to delete Troubles legislation immunity clause"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MPs in London have voted to delete a controversial immunity clause from the current Troubles legacy legislation in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>After a three hour debate, a so-called &#8220;remedial order&#8221; amending the Troubles Act was voted through.<\/p>\n<p>Three hundred and seventy three MPs supported the move.<\/p>\n<p>It was opposed by 106.<\/p>\n<p>The remedial order has also to be passed by the House of Lords before it takes effect. <\/p>\n<p>As well as deleting the controversial immunity clause from existing legislation, the vote clears the way for several hundred civil cases linked to the Troubles to be relisted.<\/p>\n<p>They had been guillotined under the former Tory government&#8217;s legacy arrangements.<\/p>\n<p>The vote in the UK parliament forms part of the current Labour government&#8217;s pledge to repeal and replace the legacy law which had been roundly condemned by all sides in Northern Ireland and the Irish Government.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A copy of the newly published joint framework report addressing the legacy of the Northern Ireland Troubles on display\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/002331a0-614.jpg\"\/><br \/>\nA framework agreement on the Troubles legacy was announced by the British and Irish governments last September<\/p>\n<p>It offered conditional immunity from prosecution for those who co-operated with a truth recovery body.<\/p>\n<p>The courts in Northern Ireland found that the immunity provision and the shutting down of civil actions was a breach of the UK&#8217;s commitments under the European Convention on Human Rights.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"UK Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Hilary Benn arrives at Downing Street\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/00237feb-614.jpg\"\/><br \/>\nNorthern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn said the move is essential to rebuild trust<\/p>\n<p>The Labour government is separately bringing forward a new legacy bill which will replace the one it inherited from the Tories.<\/p>\n<p>It follows an agreement with the Irish Government last autumn on fresh legacy arrangements for Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>It will reform and rename the existing legacy body and provide greater oversight and independence.<\/p>\n<p>The Irish authorities have said they will also legislate to facilitate cross border legacy investigations in due course.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime an Irish interstate case against the UK authorities before the European Court of Human Rights over the existing legacy provisions remains live.<\/p>\n<p>It is expected to be withdrawn when the Government assesses that the agreement it reached last year has been faithfully reflected in the replacement UK act.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"MPs in London have voted to delete a controversial immunity clause from the current Troubles legacy legislation in&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":257069,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[42,43,40,38,41,39],"class_list":{"0":"post-257068","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-headlines","8":"tag-headlines","9":"tag-news","10":"tag-top-news","11":"tag-top-stories","12":"tag-topnews","13":"tag-topstories"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/257068","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=257068"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/257068\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/257069"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=257068"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=257068"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=257068"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
