{"id":257919,"date":"2026-01-22T12:24:06","date_gmt":"2026-01-22T12:24:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/257919\/"},"modified":"2026-01-22T12:24:06","modified_gmt":"2026-01-22T12:24:06","slug":"trumps-greenland-climbdown-brings-relief-but-way-forward-unclear-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/257919\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump\u2019s Greenland climbdown brings relief but way forward unclear \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">US president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s abrupt climbdown on using tariffs as a weapon to seize <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/greenland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/greenland\/\">Greenland<\/a> brought relief on Thursday, but left uncertainty on ending \u200da standoff that has risked the deepest rupture in transatlantic ties in decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Trump on Wednesday stepped back from the threat of imposing tariffs on countries opposing his plans and ruled out using force, suggesting instead that \u200da framework deal over the Arctic island was in sight. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">His ambition to wrest sovereignty over Greenland from fellow Nato member <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/denmark\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/denmark\/\">Denmark<\/a> has threatened to  rupture the alliance that underpinned western security since the end of  the second World War, and reignite a trade war with Europe. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">After meeting with Nato secretary general Mark Rutte, Mr Trump said there could be a deal that satisfies his desire for a missile-defence system and access to critical minerals while blocking \u200cwhat he says are Russia and China\u2019s ambitions in the Arctic. European shares rebounded. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But the exact nature of any deal was not immediately clear and Mr Rutte, who met Mr Trump at the World Economic Forum in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/davos\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/davos\/\">Davos<\/a>, Switzerland, said they \u2060had not discussed whether Greenland would remain in Danish hands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He told a panel on Thursday they had discussed how Nato should best defend the Arctic against Russia \u200cand \u200bChina.<\/p>\n<p>Donald Trump, speaking in Davos, has said that the US needs Greenland for international protection, but he will not use force to get it. Video: Reuters <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cOne \u200dworkstream coming out of yesterday &#8230; is to make sure when it comes to Greenland, particularly, that we ensure that the Chinese and the Russians will not gain access to the Greenland economy [or] militarily to Greenland,\u201d Mr Rutte said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Danish prime minister Mette Frederiksen said Denmark and Greenland would continue to engage in constructive talks, provided there was respect for her country\u2019s territorial integrity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Her defence minister, Troels Lund Poulsen, later said \u2060Denmark has established a clear red line in discussions over Greenland, stating the country will not cede sovereignty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cFollowing Wednesday\u2019s meeting between NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Donald Trump, we are in a \u2060much better place today than we were yesterday,\u201d he said on \u2060X. \u201cI am very happy about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Germany\u2019s vice chancellor, Lars Klingbeil, however, cautioned against premature optimism about the issue being solved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s good that they are engaged in dialogue, but we have to wait a bit and not get our hopes up too soon,\u201d Mr Klingbeil told Germany\u2019s ZDF television on Wednesday \u200devening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/01\/21\/trumps-speech-reflects-how-emboldened-he-has-become-and-how-ineffectual-europe-is\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump\u2019s Davos speech reflects how emboldened he has become and how ineffectual Europe isOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Addressing the issue for the first time in public, Russian president Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Greenland\u2019s ownership was not Russia\u2019s concern.
