\n\tScarlett Johansson<\/a> has joined 700 entertainment industry figures in demanding that tech companies stop \u201cstealing\u201d copyrighted artistic work to train their AI<\/a> models.<\/p>\n

\n\tJohansson has put her name to the \u201cStealing Isn\u2019t Innovation\u201d movement from the Human Artistry Campaign, which also boasts Cate Blanchett<\/a> and Joseph Gordon-Levitt<\/a> among its supporters.<\/p>\n

\n\tThey have accused unnamed tech giants of \u201ctheft\u201d and demanded that the companies engage in \u201cethical\u201d partnerships when attempting to access artistic content. It marks one of the most coordinated backlashes against AI exploitation from the Hollywood community. <\/p>\n

\n\tOther backers include Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan and Olivia Munn, star of Your Friends and Neighbors, while music artists like MGMT have also signed. The New York Times has carried ads spotlighting the campaign.<\/p>\n

\n\tA website features the full list of signatories<\/a> next to a statement, which reads: \u201cAmerica\u2019s creative community is the envy of the world and creates jobs, economic growth, and exports.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBut rather than respect and protect this valuable asset, some of the biggest tech companies, many backed by private equity and other funders, are using American creators\u2019 work to build AI platforms without authorization or regard for copyright law.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u200b\u201dArtists, writers, and creators of all kinds are banding together with a simple message: Stealing our work is not innovation. It\u2019s not progress. It\u2019s theft \u2013 plain and simple.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cA better way exists \u2013 through licensing deals and partnerships, some AI companies have taken the responsible, ethical route to obtaining the content and materials they wish to use. It is possible to have it all. We can have advanced, rapidly developing AI and ensure creators\u2019 rights are respected.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJohansson\u2019s support is notable, given that the Lost in Translation star has previously spoken out against the \u201cmisuse\u201d of artificial intelligence. The actress threatened legal action against OpenAI<\/a>\u00a0in 2024 over a ChatGPT voice assistant that sounded like her own.<\/p>\n
