The showroom\u2019s warm, layered decoration is signature Hubert Zandberg, the space conceived in overlapping zones, each expressing a different sensibility. There is a Californian corner \u2013 anchored by a low vintage sofa and a South African surfboard \u2013 alongside a mid-century-inflected study area. One room channels earthy Moroccan-meets-Mediterranean, while another is pure Notting Hill bohemia, with an ornate bed and mossy wallhanging. The overall effect is dramatic but approachable. \u2018People often walk in and say, \u201cI could live here\u201d and, for me, that\u2019s the best compliment.\u2019<\/p>\n
He is also keen for it to act as an ideas incubator, with events, collaborations and pop-ups being planned. Hubert\u2019s retail background \u2013 he started out at a concept store in South Africa while studying business, and later worked at Heal\u2019s \u2013 has informed much of his approach. \u2018Retail is like farming,\u2019 he explains. \u2018You tend to it constantly. You refresh, you regroup. It can\u2019t stand still.\u2019<\/p>\n

Chiming with the designer\u2019s high-low style, the items range between \u2018\u00a335 and \u00a335,000\u2019. The idea is to offer pieces people can use every day \u2013 linens, ceramics, glassware, candles \u2013 alongside exceptional antiques and one-off finds. Hubert\u2019s intention is not to create an exclusive retail destination, but rather a welcoming and inspiring place. \u2018You don\u2019t need to come here to buy, and things don\u2019t need to be expensive to be valuable. A stone or a shell can be as beautiful as a bronze, if it means something special to you.\u2019<\/p>\n
This belief in the emotional resonance of objects is at the heart of Hubert\u2019s design philosophy. \u2018Everything here vibrates,\u2019 he asserts. \u2018The trick is to tune them to the same frequency, so they form a choir, not a cacophony. I don\u2019t buy pieces for spaces \u2013 I find spaces for pieces. The objects tell me what the room is going to be.\u2019<\/p>\n
For clients who struggle with layering, his advice is simple: don\u2019t be too literal. \u2018Take inspiration from memory, not replication. When you see a space you love, let it sit for a while, then respond to its atmosphere, not the exact details.\u2019 And for those building their own wunderkammer at home? \u2018Be curious and selective. It\u2019s like dressing \u2013 you already know what feels right. Trust that\u2019 \u03c7<\/p>\n
