{"id":259557,"date":"2026-01-23T10:04:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-23T10:04:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/259557\/"},"modified":"2026-01-23T10:04:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-23T10:04:07","slug":"healthcare-assistants-in-cork-set-to-strike-next-month-over-pay-and-rostering-dispute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/259557\/","title":{"rendered":"Healthcare assistants in Cork set to strike next month over pay and rostering dispute"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"contextmenu internal_Body1st\">Siptu members working as healthcare assistants in the HSE home support service in Cork are to engage in strike action in February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The strike will be on a regional basis \u2014 including workers from Cork and Kerry, as well as Clare, Limerick, and Donegal \u2014 in a dispute arising from their employer\u2019s failure to honour agreements on terms and conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Healthcare assistants in the HSE home support service will implement 24-hour work stoppages in Cork and Kerry on February 19 and 26, with other dates being chosen for the other regions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">More than 1,000 Cork Siptu members voted overwhelmingly for strike action this month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Cork Siptu representative Natasha Linehan Treacy told\u00a0The Echo\u00a0at the time: \u201cStriking is the last thing our members want to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">Detriment<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Siptu organiser Graham Macken said: \u201cThe failure of the HSE to honour agreed improvements in [healthcare assistants\u2019] terms and conditions has negatively impacted services, to the detriment of workers and the clients they care for.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\n            \u201cThe issues which remain unresolved include underpayments dating back to 2018 and the non-implementation of rostering agreements.\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\n            \u201cThere are also ongoing breaches of the Organisation of Working Time Act 1997, resulting in worker burnout due to excessive split shifts and inadequate breaks.\u201d\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">During the work stoppages, staff will not be available for their normal roster, and pickets will be placed at the offices of their employers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Contingency arrangements for emergency issues relating to service users will be agreed with the employer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Siptu sector organiser Liz Cloherty said the union is available to engage with the HSE in order to resolve the dispute: \u201cHowever, our members will be left with no alternative but to withdraw their labour should no meaningful engagement be forthcoming.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Siptu members working as healthcare assistants in the HSE home support service in Cork are to engage in&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":259558,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[34],"tags":[15607,79,103,397,396,61,60,10452],"class_list":["post-259557","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-healthcare","tag-cork-health","tag-cork-news","tag-health","tag-health-care","tag-healthcare","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-keeping-cork-healthy"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/259557","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=259557"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/259557\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/259558"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=259557"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=259557"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=259557"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
