Hawaiian today became the world\u2019s first major carrier to deploy Starlink\u2019s high-speed, low-latency broadband internet after it debuted the service\u00a0onboard one of its Airbus A321neo, N228HA,\u00a0which flew from\u00a0Honolulu to Long Beach. The carrier\u2019s Wi-Fi, which is rolling out on select A321neo aircraft as they are activated over the coming months, is complimentary and available the moment guests step onboard the aircraft \u2013 without tedious registration pages and clunky payment portals.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn marrying this best-in-class technology with our authentic Hawaiian hospitality, we are offering our guests a travel experience unlike any other airline flying to and from the Hawaiian Islands,\u201d said Chris Liebertz, senior director of engineering at Hawaiian Airlines.\u00a0<\/p>\n
A Test of Strength\u00a0<\/p>\n
The speed of Hawaiian’s new in-flight internet service allows streaming, gaming and other connected experiences often enjoyed at home \u2013 even while traversing the farthest reaches of the Pacific Ocean.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cStarlink\u2019s self-designed aviation terminal installed on Hawaiian’s aircraft allows each plane to receive strong, fast internet signals from the satellites orbiting above Earth,\u201d said Will Seidel, director of Starlink engineering at SpaceX. \u201cThe terminal will seamlessly switch connections from satellite to satellite as planes cross the Pacific, providing an uninterrupted internet experience for passengers.\u201d<\/p>\n

To ensure high performance, Hawaiian and Starlink conducted tests, including live flights to evaluate connectivity under different conditions and identify opportunities to improve user experience.<\/p>\n
\u201cDuring these tests, employees streamed shows and movies, played video games with friends, downloaded and uploaded large files, worked in real time, and scrolled on social media,\u201d Liebertz explained.\u00a0\u201cEach assessment then allowed us to fine-tune the service to the high-performance level for which Starlink is known.\u201d<\/p>\n

A select group of Hawaiian Airlines employees were invited to a special charter flight between Honolulu and Hilo to test the Starlink Wi-Fi using their various personal devices.<\/p>\n

Rolling Out the Service<\/p>\n
Before the public launch,\u00a0Hawaiian and Starlink \u201cworked alongside the FAA to verify that our aviation terminal (antenna) met strict safety standards,\u201d Seidel explained. <\/p>\n
\u201cWhen we finished our tests on the ground and in-flight on the first A321neo, the FAA certified Starlink for use on the rest of Hawaiian\u2019s A321neo fleet \u2013 as well as any other A321neo,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Hawaiian is working with Starlink to roll out the technology across its long-haul fleet. The carrier expects to install and activate antennas on all its 18 A321neo aircraft by spring, followed by its A330s by the end of the year, and\u00a0later its new flagship aircraft, the Boeing 787-9. Until it is available fleetwide, the service will surprise and delight guests as they board their flights.<\/p>\n
