The asking price for the 217-acre estate\u2014which includes gallery buildings, an historic residence, vineyards and more\u2014is <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/vineyardandranch.com\/properties\/5200-sonoma-highway-napa-ca-94559-326002609\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">$10.9m<\/a>. Crucially, the art is not for sale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">\u201cOur priority is to make sure that the collection stays together and that we are able to do exhibitions and loans from our permanent collection,\u201d the centre\u2019s executive director, Kate Eilertsen, told the <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/entertainment\/arts-exhibits\/article\/di-rosa-napa-museum-sale-21299530.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">San Francisco Chronicle<\/a>. A possible hoped-for outcome, she added, is that \u201csome very wealthy art-loving philanthropist comes in and says: \u2018I\u2019ll purchase it, and I will lease it back to you for $5 a year and you can keep everything here.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The centre has made significant changes to its programmes over the past year, including scaling back its programming, reducing its staff numbers and prioritising wedding rentals. It is also working to keep the property, its galleries and its outdoor art collection\u2014which includes marquee works by Mark di Suvero, Robert Arneson, Viola Frey, William T. We are continuing to explore philanthropic partnerships with supporters who share our commitment to the mission.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The centre\u2019s Napa Valley campus and its <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dirosaart.org\/visit-di-rosa-sf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">admission-free gallery<\/a> at the Minnesota Street Project in San Francisco will remain open throughout the sale process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">In 2019, the centre came under fire for a plan to <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/nonprofitquarterly.org\/napa-museum-plan-to-deaccession-art-works-raises-art-communitys-ire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sell off<\/a> the majority of <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dirosaart.org\/collection-selections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">its 1,600-piece collection<\/a>, which is considered to be uniquely rich in works by Bay Area artists. The sale was ultimately called off amid <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/news\/dirosa-foundation-open-letter-13129\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">outcry<\/a> from the local art community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The centre\u2019s property on Sonoma Highway was acquired by the vintner Rene di Rosa in 1960 and, 26 years later, he used the proceeds from the sale of his winery to establish the Rene &amp; Veronica di Rosa Foundation. The event helped generate more than $13,000 in donations to the centre on top of the rental fees, Eilertsen told the Chronicle, and it has spurred additional wedding business\u2014though not enough to cover the di Rosa\u2019s operational costs. As a result, the museum has put off several upgrades to its facilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The di Rosa\u2019s financial hardships are consistent with the experiences of other Bay Area art institutions. Both of San Francisco\u2019s independent art schools\u2014the <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/keywords\/san-francisco-art-institute\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">San Francisco Art Institute<\/a> and the <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2026\/01\/13\/california-college-arts-closing-vanderbilt-university-takeover\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">California College of the Arts<\/a>\u2014are ceasing operations and selling their properties.
